Best Japanese Whisky: The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky Aged 12 Years

The youngest and most available expression from Suntorys Hakushu line, this release still arrives with a hefty price tag but such is the nature of shopping for high-quality Japanese whisky. Stump up for a bottle and rest assured that the liquid inside will deliver considerable consolation. Delicately peated, this single malt serves tantalizing smokiness that weaves wonderfully among savory notes of herbal green tea. Orchard and stone fruit provide a robust, attractive, fruity core.

White Horse / Bot.1980s: Ballsy

I just tried a 1970s bottling from this legendary blend, which was very old school and lovely. Luckily, I have another bottle, albeit from a later decade. Lets find out if this White Horse from the 1980s

Best Budget Whiskey: Larceny Kentucky Straight Very Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey

White Horse Blended Scotch Whisky (1970s)

As a wheated bourbon, this is not only a budget-friendly option but one that arrives with an approachable flavor profile. At the $20-ish price point, most whiskeys typically dont offer much beyond their suitability for cocktails. Larceny Small Batch proves a reliable, enjoyable, and modestly complex sipper. It also mixes a mean Whiskey Sour.

White Horse Distillers Profile

When restless Sir Peter Mackie died in 1924, the company took the unusual step of reorganising and renaming itself after its best-known product. Sir Peters company had been making White Horse blended whisky since the 1880s, the name originating from a coaching inn on Edinburghs Canongate that was also owned by the Mackie family.

Best Single Malt Scotch: The Glen Grant 15 Year Old

For this single malt, age is but a number. Despite its 15-year age statement, its floral and citrus-forward aromas give the Scotch a youthful profile. Add to that sweet undertones of cake batter, and the result is a rounded, balanced sip thats lively but with a restrained alcohol content not too hot on the palate.

White Horse Scotch Whisky

Although the brand has existed since before 1890, that was the year White Horse earned its reputation for the high-quality spirit it is. The responsible for that boom was Restless Peter Mackie, who was both the creator of the spirit and the brands chairman.

Being from Speyside, the White Horse Scotch surprises for not being as aggressive as one would expect from a whisky from this area, with more bitter and punchy flavours. White Horse has a light turfle touch and a strong presence of Lagavulin, ending up on a smooth and round-bodied scotch with light golden colour and a smoky, long and pleasant finish.

All Of The Best Whiskey To Drink In 2022

White Horse 1930s Blended Scotch Whisky Review

From the simple combination of grain, water, and yeast, distillers yield a stunningly complex array of spirits. Were talking, of course, about the world of whiskey. And it is a veritable planet, with single nations producing myriad styles, and distillers planting flags in each of the metaphorical corners of the globe.

While its hard, if not impossible, to reduce each style and nation down to one definitive example, certain bottles serve as shining ambassadors for their categories. Catering to every budget, palate, and drinking occasion, here are 15 of the best whiskeys to drink in 2022.

Best Cask Finished Whiskey: Arran Single Malt Sauternes Cask Finish

Cask finished whiskies are by no means hard to come by these days, but this bottling stands out from the pack, especially in the Scotch realm. Aged in Sauternes casks, this whiskys notes of honey, white flowers, and ripe peaches reflect those of the prized sweet wines from Bordeaux. Add to that a rich texture that coats the palate, and you have a truly memorable spirit ideal for sipping over a large cube of ice.

Best New World Whiskey: Stauning Floor Malted Rye Whisky

Made to the same specifications as American rye whiskey, Stauning uses locally sourced grains, floor malting, and pot distillation for this remarkable Danish release. Stylistically, its profile mimics Nordic cuisine, with notes of caraway seeds defining its personality-rich nose and palate. Bottled at 3 years old, it delivers complexity well beyond its age.

Rough And Fruity Seabiscuit

White Horse is indeed, a very malty one. Lagavulin has done good things to it. Still, there is that robust blended whisky note, which doesnt suit so well for me. So not as good as I expected. Fruity notes in a rough and occasionally stingy palate is just not my cup of tea. We are talking about too straight forward and robust Seabiscuit here.

Still, it has character. I can imagine people liking it because of the Lagavulin involvement. I know, as a fan of Lagavulin, I should. Too much grains in a blend just ruins it for me. Even though I did manage to get some of those malt aromas while using a whisky nosing glass.

Best Rye: Frey Ranch Straight Rye Whiskey

Whisky White Horse 1000ml

These are exciting times for rye whiskey, especially among the nations smaller-scale producers. Among them all large and small none capture the spicy, savory, herbaceous essence of the grain in distilled form as purely and attractively as Nevadas Frey Ranch Distillery. A bonafide grain to glass release, this producer grows all of the winter cereal used in this 100 percent rye whiskey, and the finished product is undeniably worth the effort.

Best Blended Scotch: Johnnie Walker 18 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky

As the second child in the Johnnie Walker family, many might look past this 18-year-old release in favor of the brands iconic Blue Label bottling. Where value for money is concerned, this could be considered a mistake. With an average price of around half its elder siblings, this expression comes exceedingly close in terms of quality, complexity, and depth of flavor, delivering a greatest hits of the many styles of Scotch in one harmonious blend.

Average price: $91

Best Bourbon: Knob Creek 12 Year Old Bourbon

With an average price of close to $70, this release doesnt qualify as an everyday sipper for most drinkers. Yet so enticing and characterful is its profile that you might struggle to reach for anything else in your bourbon collection after buying a bottle. At 12 years old and 50 percent ABV, it finds a powerful yet balanced sweet spot, overdelivering on age and quality compared with similarly priced bottles .

I was allowed to try this blend and it was the first sample that day. At the same time, it is the oldest vintage I have tasted so far. Unfortunately I didn’t write any notes for it, but I remember that it was very unusual at first, a bit of smoke that I think comes from the Lagavulin, lots of wax and some dirty oil with very light spiciness, very compact but well-structured aromas and a wonderful, filling mouthfeel with a subtle but clearly perceptible sweetness. The finish was rather long. A total of 91.5 points from me for this experience.

Best Splurge Whiskey: The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old

Some things are worth balling-out for. This luxe permanent expression from The Macallan happens to be one of them. The prized juice is aged in ex-oloroso sherry oak casks, which impart aromas of rich caramel and golden raisins, offset by a whiff of spicy ginger. On the palate, expect lush, nutty goodness along with an undercurrent of dried fruit. You wont regret splurging on this bottle.

Best Peated Scotch: Kilchoman Distillery Machir Bay Islay Single Malt Whisky

Doesn’t quite reach the younger horses from the 80s in terms of expressiveness and complexity. Especially more fruit would have been nice. Is perhaps due to the longer bottle storage. But here too: the aromas are often confusingly similar. For the full review, go here: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2022/09/03/von-koeniginnen-und-weissen-pferden/

While age statements neither equate to nor guarantee quality, its worth stating how remarkable it is that this 16-year-old release carries an average price of just $76. White Horse Blended Scotch Whisky 40%. 30ml sample from a modern bottling, I believe.Dark golden yellow. Aroma is a little furry, old dried apple chips, slightly gassy, some cheap toffee sweets, toffee eclairs. Taste is toasted bread, peppery, dark wood, some neutral spirit vs peppery bready spirit, not smoky as such but very peppery. A good BSW. Quite one dimensional but very enjoyable. Would happily knock back a fair amount of this. Great value blend. I’m sure a lot comes down to the particular bottling though. 3.5/84B

That’s where it all began, maybe that’s why I overestimate a little, it’s not worth drinking in its pure form, but it can, not bad for its segment.

08 apr 2018 9:51 am Pretty decent for a cheaper basic blend and actually a favourite in it’s price range . A mild amount of smoke, some citrus, vanilla, toffee and dusty caramel. The latter is also it’s major flaw. There’s so much colourant in this you can actually taste it.

A blast from the past. I only obtained a 2cl Sample of a 1976 bottling. Nice shite. They do not make blends like this anymore. I am very fond of the subtle solvent like linseed note. Besides: Is there any Lagavulin in there? Caught a whiff of Laga smoke. Not bitter as many blends from these days. Smooth stuff with a decent finish. I guess the bottle and my sample lost some alcohol content over the years. Still a very good NAS blend. I would have liked to taste it in its prime.

Has just for a NAS a strong finish, very oldschool, who misses it will find it here. Always nice to taste the old WH.

  • Nose

Very oldschool like all the old ones from White Horse, old library, dusty leather, sweet malt, dried up heathland, something earthy, some orange peel, charred oak briquettes, toast

  • Taste

Beautiful dry oak briquettes again, heather herbs, lavender, oregano, hint of dried peach slices and orange slices, clear malt, tobacco box, light herbal honey
