Winemakers may add sugar to their wine to make them sweeter and easier for some people to enjoy. However, winemakers usually add more sugar to wine to produce higher alcoholic content.
It starts early in the fermentation state when cane or beet sugar is added to the grapes before fermenting. This process provides more sugar for the fermentation yeast to eat, producing more alcohol.
This process has become common mostly in cooler countries and cold-weather growing regions because it helps to increase alcohol levels and make their wine more enjoyable.
However, many countries have banned this practice. For example, Australia, Italy, Argentina, Spain, South Africa, Portugal, and Greece do not allow for chaptalization, while France and Germany do.
Benefits Of Red Wine For People With Diabetes
Effects on blood sugar aside, there is some evidence that red wine might provide benefits to people with type 2 diabetes.
A recent study revealed that moderate red wine consumption can reduce the risks of heart disease in people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes.
In the study, more than 200 participants were monitored for two years. One group had a glass of red wine each night with dinner, one had white wine, and the other had mineral water. All followed a healthy Mediterranean-style diet without any calorie restrictions.
After two years, the red wine group had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein than they did before, and lower cholesterol levels overall. They also saw benefits in glycemic control.
The researchers concluded that drinking moderate amounts of red wine in conjunction with a healthy diet can modestly decrease heart disease risks.
Older studies also reveal associations between moderate red wine intake and health benefits among type 2 diabetics, whether well-controlled or not. Benefits included improved post-meal blood sugar levels, better next morning fasting blood sugar levels, and improved insulin resistance. The review also points out that it may not be the alcohol itself, but rather components of the red wine, like polyphenols that confer the benefits.

There are more and more companies creating low-carb beers and light beersthat are excellent choices for the beer drinker who is health conscious. If youre trying to stay away from calories it is best to select the kind of alcohol you select. Look up the nutritional info in the label to determine low-calorie and low-carb beverages. In general, beers that are low in calories tend to be low in carbs.
Low Alcohol Strength More Sugar
None of the 30 wines studied listed sugar content on their labels.
The current analysis also found that wines with the most sugar were the lower-strength products. The AHA researchers are concerned that people who choose lower-strength alcohol as a healthier option unknowingly consume more sugar.
This can increase the risk of developing a host of chronic diseases.
MNT asked Crompton if the high sugar content in lower-strength wines drives consumption more than the alcohol itself:
While a sweet drink may be more palatable for some and lead them to drinking more, alcohol consumption is driven by the low price, how easily available it is, and the high volume of marketing.

Which Wine Ages Longer Red Wine Or White Wine
When it comes to ageing, there are definitely some differences between red wine vs white wine.
There are definitely many exceptions, but generally speaking:
- You should drink unoaked white wines within 2 years.
- Drink oaked white wines within 5 years.
- Drink most red wines within 5 years.
- Special red wines can age for up to 20 years.
How Much Sugar In White Wine
White wine can have as little as 1.5 grams of sugar, again dependent on the brand and amount you’re drinking. White wine is the lighter, crisper, sweeter wine. What Different Levels Of Sugar In Wines Can You Find
The real indicator of how much sugar wine has can be derived from the type of wine it is.
Dry wines have the lowest content of sugar. Typically, you can expect dry wines to have between 0.1 – 0.3 percent residual sugar in them . The driest of the wines are called bone dry, and these are the wines that have no sugar content at all
Dry red wines leave a dry feeling in your throat and tongue and even a puckering sensation. A few examples of dry red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Bordeaux, and Burgundy.
Dry white wines will keep the fruity flavors and smell of sweetness, but its only due to the acidity of the grape since no real sugar is in the wine. A few examples of dry white wines are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio.
Next are the semi-dry or off-dry wines. These wines are a little sweeter than dry wines, and they typically have 1 – 3 percent sugar . Some examples of off-dry whites are Pinot Blanc, Viognier, Grüner Veltliner, and Gewürztraminer.
Sweet wines are next on the scale of sweetness. These wines have 35 120 grams of sugar per liter. A few examples of sweets wines are Moscato and Sweet Riesling. Still, there are wines that are classified as very sweet. These wines will have anywhere from 120 grams of sugar per liter and above. These very sweet wines are often the wine beginners like for its fruity and intense flavors. Some examples of sweet wines are Tawny Port, Vin Santo Rosso, Banyuls, and Maury.
Red Wine Vs White Wine: Health Benefits
Depending on where you need a health boost will determine whether red wine or white wine is better for you. As I explained earlier in the post, red wine is fermented with the grape skin on, and white wine is fermented with the skin off and those skins make a big difference in the health benefits of wine.
While both wines have health benefits, red wines are known to have more, because most of the good stuff comes from the grape skin and seeds. Since red wine soaks with its skins, theres a lot more of those properties in it.
Red wine skins have resveratrol, which is known to help with cholesterol levels, and prevent blood clots. So, red wine is actually good for your heart .
White wine is shown to help control blood sugar levels and has less calories which may be more important to your personal health.
