The Complete Tennessee Whiskey Guide

As weve already explored, there several varieties of American whiskey that have a lot in common with bourbon. Its closest relative will be corn whiskey and its high use of corn results in a very sweet-tasting beverage.

Alternatively, you can consider rye and wheat whiskey, which both taste slightly different as we already explained above. Meanwhile, there are other whiskeys that you can consider from around the world. Most, however, will be produced using other ingredients.

Scotch whisky, for instance, uses malted barley. As a result, its a much more buttery and savoury beverage. Similarly, some regions will smoke the malted barley with peat, which results in a unique flavour often associated with Hebridean territories like Islay and Skye.

That said, Scotch whisky is aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Since the barrels have been used, they dont impart as much flavour, but there is still a noticeable influence.

Otherwise, Irish whiskey may bear a closer resemblance to bourbon in that it is lighter and more floral. Since its usually triple-distilled, the barley is less noticeable with the wood playing a greater role.

Interestingly, though, Mexico has a few corn whiskeys given its strong maize agriculture. Theyre certainly worth checking out as a unique

What The Pros Think

For Erick Arce Marin, the mixologist at Costa Ricas Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, bourbon is a great starter spirit for drinkers looking to try whiskey for the first time, due to its sweeter notes. While bourbon is often a popular choice with younger customers, Marin notes that other whiskeys can present stronger and more complex flavors, making them somewhat of an acquired taste, best appreciated once a more comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the spirit have been achieved.

Which One Should I Drink

When you wonder what is the difference between bourbon and whiskey, you may also want to know what one you should be drinking.

The first thing to note is that when you are drinking bourbon, you are still drinking whiskey.

However, when you drink whiskey, you are not necessarily drinking bourbon.

There are five main kinds of whiskey, as listed above. Irish whiskey is smooth but is less sweet than bourbon.

American whiskey usually has vanilla and caramel notes with a bit of smokiness. Canadian whiskey is easy to drink and is light and sweet. Scotch whiskey can vary depending on the location.

Some will taste smokey while others will be sweet and smooth. Finally, Japanese whiskey has a balance of many different flavors and is bold.

Bourbon is famous for its smoothness and sweet flavor.

Since the liquor ages in a charred oak barrel, bourbons will have much stronger vanilla notes.

When alcohol is smooth, it means that there will be no or little burn. These characteristics are why bourbon will be great for beginner whiskey drinkers.

Some whiskies will feel as if it is burning your throat as it goes down bourbon will not be near as bad. Furthermore, bourbon will be sweeter than other harsh whiskies.

You can use it as a stepping stone, so to speak, to slowly become more accustomed to strong liquors.

If you want to get into whiskey, we highly recommend trying bourbon first. It is one of the smoothest and sweetest relatives of whiskey.

Other whiskeys can be aged in barrels previously used to age other spirits, and they don’t necessarily need to be whiskey barrels port, sherry, and rum casks are used in the aging process for non-bourbon whiskeys. Bourbon And Whiskey As Kitchen Aids And Collector’s Items

The real difference between scotch, whiskey, and bourbon

But, back to the pressing issue of what constitutes a proper Old Fashioned, it is perfectly fine to use either bourbon or whiskey. Both offer a smoky, sweet, and strong kick to the drink, and when mixed with sugar water and bitters, it becomes an age-old classic cocktail. But if you really want to take it back, Thrillist explains that it was first made with gin in an 1862 bartending book.

Still, bourbon and whiskey can be used for much more than mules and sours. Besides great cocktails, bourbon makes an excellent tenderizing marinade for chicken, beef, or whatever is on the menu. It’s also a great way to introduce a smoky and caramelized element to jams, sauces, and baked goods. Whisky, on the other hand, is great for desserts, according to BBC Good Food. Pudding, tarts, pies, and cake can all benefit from the savoriness of a splash of whisky.

Lastly, they are popular and expensive collector’s items. So, if you have a few extra dollars to spare, then you’re in luck. Some rare 1984 bourbons cost upwards of $30,000, but compared to a $1.9 million bottle of Macallan whisky, the first seems a little more doable. However, the most expensive whisky yet to be purchased is Isabella’s Islay a diamond and ruby-studded bottle selling for a mere $6.4 million, per Restaurant Clicks. A one-ounce cocktail of this would equal nearly $256,000. Who’s picking up the tab?

It Doesn’t Need To Come From Kentucky

You may have heard that in order to be a bourbon, the whiskey has to be from Kentucky. That’s not quite truebourbon can be made outside that state. But to be designated a “Kentucky bourbon,” the spirit has to be both distilled and aged in Kentucky. The name “bourbon” even comes from old Bourbon, what is now Bourbon County, Kentucky. Most bourbon is made in Kentucky, but not all, so it has become synonymous with the spirit, much as the Champagne region in France is synonymous with champagne, even though sparkling wine using similar methods is produced elsewhere. So next time you order a bourbon, you know that what you’ll be getting in your glass isn’t just a whiskey, but a specific kind of whiskey.

Bourbon vs. Whiskey: What

There is a lingering perception, as the scene from the movie demonstrated so well a quarter century ago, that single malts are always superior to blends. This is not correct, as fans of Johnnie Walker Blue Label will be quick to attest. Rather, theyre just different, and there are plenty of great and not-so-great examples of both. Part of the shade that gets thrown at blended whisky is likely a result of its sheer volume: There are far more blends on the market than there are single malts, and therefore more underwhelming examples of the latter than the former. But the good stuffJohnnie Blue, Dewars 25 Year Old, any of the ones below is every bit as pleasurable as its single malt counterparts.

To get back to that blending exercise I did in crafting my own single malt Bruichladdich, it turns out that there was no conflict in definition or terminology: All of the components that I was sent had been distilled by Bruichladdich entirely from malted barley and water they all had just been aged in different types of oak and for different periods of time. Blended all together, they still resulted in a single malt Scotch.

Complicated? Absolutely. And thats not even addressing the amazing single malt and blended whisky produced in Japan, India, Australia, the United States, and beyond. But understanding the difference between all of these different types of whisky is important, especially as the world of Scotch, Bourbon, and the rest continues its expansion.

What Does Bourbon Taste Like Vs Whiskey

Because bourbon is aged in new, charred-oak barrels, its typically described as having notes of caramel, vanilla and oak. Bourbon can also have tasting notes such as baking spices, black pepper, cocoa and fruit. Bourbon tends to be smoother than whiskey, with a softer mouthfeel and an overall sweet-presenting flavor, making it a good entry-level sipper for those new to whiskey. Wheated bourbons have a mash bill with a high concentration of wheat, which creates an even sweeter taste.

The taste of whiskey varies depending on the style. Whiskey tends to have a woody or oaky flavor profile with notes of spice, fruit, nuts, vanilla or caramel. Although some of whiskeys flavor notes overlap with bourbon, whiskey tends to have a grainier, sharper mouthfeel than bourbon. Rye whiskey, which has a mash that contains at least 51 percent rye, tends to have a spicier flavor profile than bourbon and some other whiskeys.

What Makes Bourbon Different From Whisky?

Despite its sweet flavour, bourbon whiskey should contain no sugar. In fact, the use of any additives, including caramel colouring, is prohibited in straight bourbon whiskey.

Although bourbon is made from grain that contains gluten, the distillation process should separate the protein from the resulting whiskey. In mild cases of gluten intolerance, it should be fine.

However, some people with more severe conditions like Celiacs disease do, albeit occasionally, report some complaints. Generally speaking, though, any distilled spirit should be gluten-free.

Otherwise, bourbon whiskey contains no carbs and is very light in calories. Dont expect more than 70 calories in a single 1 Oz shot.

Whiskey Vs Bourbon Vs Scotch Flavor

Whiskey, in general, does not have a single generic style. For example, scotch varieties like a light and grassy Speyside have relatively little in common with the powerful and peaty Islay monster. Hence, scotch whiskies can taste elegant and floral, rich and spicy, or even salty and maritime depending on a multitude of factors including barrel type, peating level, and maturation time.

The flavor difference between Irish whiskey and bourbon is much more pronounced as bourbon is generally sweeter than all other whiskey types due to a high concentrate of corn in its mash bill. Also, it often displays tasting notes like toffee, cinnamon, or vanilla, depending upon the wooden barrel used for maturation. The sugary nature of bourbon also makes it an excellent cooking liquor and mixing spirit for preparing cocktails as it complements beers, cola, coffee, and even Cointreau quite well.
