Match The Drink To The Occasion
Since triggers and rewards are such a big part of habits like drinking, the drink alternative you use has to match the alcohol youd normally drink.
For instance, a virgin cocktail makes perfect sense at a work party. Sitting at home on the couch, though? If it seems strange enough, your subconscious mind might focus on the fact that it isnt really alcohol. You may end up craving that beer anyway.
Recommendations Change With Age
Unfortunately, in addition to wrinkles and reading glasses, older adults have another bummer to consider. All of those benefits from red wine dont help the elderly. In fact, even just one glass per day can be damaging.
Research has found that elderly women who have one glass of wine per day show small reductions in heart function. This is due to the increased size of the wall of one of the heart chambers. It looks like women are more susceptible to the downsides of drinking than men. Older men who have more than 14 drinks per week have the same heart findings.
Study author Dr. Scott Solomon told the Telegraph, Women appear more susceptible than men to the cardiotoxic effects of alcohol, which might potentially contribute to a higher risk of alcoholic cardiomyopathy, for any given level of alcohol intake.
How Much Alcohol Is In A Low Alcohol Drink
In the UK, government guidance says drinks labelled as low alcohol can contain up to 1.2% alcohol by volume .4 So, one 500ml can of 1.2% ABV low alcohol beer contains 0.6 units of alcohol .
Although these drinks dont legally have to specify exactly how much alcohol they have in them, most do. So, if you want to check, a good place to start is by reading the label.
The UK Chief Medical Officers low risk drinking guidelines advise that, if you choose to drink, its safest for both men and women to drink no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days with several drink-free days, and no bingeing.
Low alcohol drinks are different to alcohol-free. Most alcohol-free drinks follow government guidance that they should be 0.05% ABV or less, but there are some alcohol-free drinks that are up to 0.5% ABV.
And low alcohol doesnt mean the same thing as reduced alcohol or light either. These can be much stronger than the 1.2% cut-off used for low alcohol. You might see the term ‘reduced alcohol’ used for a wine that is 5.5% ABV or a table beer that is 2-3% ABV .
Substituting standard alcoholic drinks for low alcohol products could help you reduce the total amount of alcohol you drink, and keep to the UK low risk drinking guidelines – which brings important health benefits. But this only works if you dont add low alcohol products to any alcohol you usually drink, otherwise youll be drinking more alcohol in total – not less.

It Can Help Fight Against Cardiovascular Disease
Whether or not red wine can help with heart health is a common discussion among health experts and wine lovers alike. Overall, research shows that moderate intake of red wine does, in fact, have some cardiovascular benefits.
In a study done by the Canadian Journal of Clinical Nutrition, results found that the polyphenols found in red wine that we discussed earlier also have numerous benefits on coronary blood flow and heart health. Polyphenols are proven to have “vaso-relaxing effects on the coronary microvessels,” which in other words, means the natural chemicals found in red wine can help relax our blood vessels, aiding in the prevention of blood clots and other cardiovascular issues.
Red wine also raises levels of lipoproteins , also known as “good cholesterol.” And according to Harvard School of Public Health, higher levels of HDLs are often correlated to a better chance of protecting yourself against cardiovascular disease.

Healthy Rituals To Replace Your Nightly Glass Of Wine
While there’s nothing wrong with having the occasional glass of wine , drinking more than the recommended amount isn’t great for your health. Lisa Valente, EatingWell’s nutrition editor and registered dietitian says, “Drinking too much isn’t great for you. Alcohol is technically a toxin and it can mess with your sleep, immune system, mood, skin and more.”
Like many people, when the pandemic began and working from home became my reality, an evening cocktail or glass of wine became an important part of my routine. Without much else to differentiate between work and downtime, my evening drink was an important demarcation point. Then came another glass with dinner, and suddenly I was half a bottle of wine deep before 9 p.m. In an effort to cut back on the alcohol, I tried giving up my 5 p.m. drink, but it was harder than I thought. The key, I realized, was to replace that ritual with something else that helped me transition into a more relaxed state of mind.

Jennifer Garner Drinks This Sparkling Fruit Drink Instead Of Wine
Garner has never shied away from talking about her love of the grape. The actor shared in a November 2021 that when the pandemic raged, she would serve herself half a glass to a glass per night and a couple of glasses on the weekend. She was never much of a drinker, but she developed a taste for wine when she became a mother. Garner has even rapped about it.
But her fondness for wine was starting to look like a problem to her, so Garner went sober for a while. The positive differences she noticed in her overall health and energy levels made her reevaluate her relationship with the liquor. Now, she has substituted it for a healthier alternative, and it sounds utterly refreshing and delicious.

“I have found kombucha to be an effective tool in transitioning off nightly nightcaps,” says Koskinen. “The sharp taste of kombucha mimics that of alcohol. The still-legal-for-kids-to-drink amount of alcohol in this fermented beverage may be enough to trick the brain into thinking its getting a dose of ethanol, which may be just enough to take the edge off.”
I order a mocktail when I meet people for drinks because it feels good to sip a drink that has an air of indulgence to it. The action also helps reduce any worry of being interrogated by strangers about why Im not drinking because mocktails look just like cocktails. I dont get a buzz, but I do get a sort of comfort.

Host A Dry Zoom Meeting
There are other things to do on Zoom besides drink. People have played games over Zoom. Theyve cooked the same meal and enjoyed the same meal over Zoom, says LeMonda. People have streamed Broadway shows over Zoom. There are a lot of things we can do via Zoom and other technology that dont involve alcohol.
The main reason is to maintain social connections which are so important to our health. Loneliness has been linked with high blood pressure, heart disease, infections, and cognitive problems. It may be twice as hard to maintain a community during the pandemic, but there are creative ways to do it. The pandemic has even provided some new opportunities for social connection through virtual classes, poetry readings, book clubs, and musical events. And dont forget old-fashioned phone and video calls to beat back isolation.
Red Or White Grape Juice
Grape juice is another beverage with a rich flavor profile that makes an excellent non-alcoholic substitute for wine.
Since wine and grape juice have almost identical flavors and colors, you can replace wine with grape juice in recipes at a 1:1 ratio. Naturally, white grape juice should be used in place of white wine, and red grape juice in place of red wine.
For less sweetness, you can add a bit of vinegar to grape juice, which will enhance the acidity and increase the tartness. Grape juice combined with vinegar also makes a great marinade for meat or vegetables.
Not only is grape juice useful in cooking, but its also rich in polyphenol antioxidants.
These have been studied for their potential to boost immune health and may lower some heart disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure .
Summary Since grape juice and wine have similar colors and flavors, grape juice can be used to replace wine at a 1:1 ratio in recipes.

Things To Do Instead Of Drinking Wine
I think women are hardwired to drink wine. Maybe its some genetic thing or tied to estrogen or something 🙂 but for whatever reason, when I talk to female clients, probably 75% of them mention their desire to drink wine, either nightly or weekly.
And I am right there with them.
I have a confession to make. I drink wine. A lot. Probably more than I should.
If youve been reading JillFit since its inception in 2010, you have probably seen me go through stages of various cheats and sweets. For a while I was on a sugar-free fro-yo kick, and then for a good year and a half I was doing weekly Reeses Pieces masterpieces, but over the last six months, its been red wine. In fact, I havent done Reeses probably since last fall. You guys know that I dont follow a strict dieting plan, and that I use preemptive cheats to maintain my weight fairly effortlessly. And red wine has become the thing Ive been doing lately. No Reeses, no fro-yo, no cheat meals, no unplanned cheats, no crazy weekend overindulgences. In fact, my eating is very controlled, as a result of PRACTICE, and because of that, I CHOOSE to have wine at specific times.
I drink wine. But I also ADJUST my eating based on that.

Meditation Can Be Active Too
If the idea of sitting still makes you want to reach for the wine bottle, try a more active approach. This could mean a walking meditation or progressive muscle relaxation. LeMonda often recommends both of these for beginners. I tell patients to start with these because theyre a little more active, she says.
