What Alcohol Is Used For Mimosas
Mimosa cocktails are made with sparkling wine. Traditionalists usually call for real French champagne from the Champagne region of France but any good quality dry sparkling wine makes a perfect pairing. Italian prosecco or Spanish cava is also a popular choice.
If you have a chilled bottle of prosecco, check out our Prosecco mimosa recipe.
Cantina Montelliana Prosecco Extra Dry
With its vibrant, fruity and floral profile, Cantina Montellianas extra dry prosecco is made for mimosas. Extra dry means this peachy, melony prosecco is a little sweeter than other styles, but Cantina Montelliana is beautifully balanced and over-delivers at this price point. Make sure to pour it in the right champagne glass.
Why it made our list: If you like your mimosas on the sweeter side, extra dry prosecco is the way to go. It has more residual sugar than other styles of bubbly.

Which Bottle Of Bubbly Should You Buy
One of my favorites is Papet del Mas Cava Brut, which I usually see for between $11 to $15. Id happily drink it on its own, but its perfect in a mimosa. If you want a bit of an upgrade, Cava Mestres 1312 Reserva Brut is another fantastic brand thats usually less than $20 and a noticeable step up from Papet. Is that necessary for a brunch cocktail that involves something as strongly flavored as orange juice? Probably not, but sometimes its nice to treat yourself.
I would avoid buying the cheapest Champagne you can find. There are bottles out there in the $20 to $30 range that technically qualify as Champagne, but theyre not usually very good. They tend to be made by wineries focusing on quantity who are buying grapes from lots of different vineyard sources, rather than using their own estate vineyards or a few trusted vineyards. When it comes to sparkling wine, Ive found that its better to get a quality version of something inexpensive than a cheap version of something thats usually expensive.
Is Prosecco Sweeter Than Champagne
Unlike Champagne or Cava, Prosecco’s secondary fermentation occurs in tanks rather than individual bottles. This process, known as charmat, is cheaper and faster than the méthode Champenoise. Prosecco tends to be sweeter than the average Champagne or Cava, and its flavors are usually simpler and fruitier.

What Champagne Is Best For Mimosasdry Or Brut
Despite the name, champagne labeled “dry” or “extra dry” will actually be slightly sweeter than a “brut” bubbly”brut” is not sweet at all. The choice is yours and depends on whether you prefer your mimosas to be on the sweeter side or not. Both will be delicious, but you just might want a little less orange juice if you’re using a slightly sweeter sparkling wine.
How We Picked These Products
Next to orange juice, bubbly is the most important part of a good mimosa. Typically, the go-to option is Champagne, a labor-intensive, often pricey sparkling wine made only in the Champagne region of northern France. To balance the sugar in O.J., we homed in on dry or semi-dry Champagnes , which are just slightly sweet, and brut Champagnes, which are even less sweet. We also considered other sparkling wines like Prosecco and cava , both of which are often utilized as less pricey Champagne alternatives. After all, Champagne can be expensive!
Our list includes options from all of the above categories, from both the low and high-end of the price spectrum. Without further ado, here are the sparkling wines you’ll want on hand the next time you’re pouring mimosas.

Bollinger James Bond 007 Champagne
Champagne Bollinger has always been an aristocratic wine. Its founder, Jacques Joseph Placide Bollinger, was of noble birth. In 1829, he partnered with his future father-in-law, Admiral Comte Villermont, and Paul-Joseph Renaudin to form the Champagne house. The majority of Champagne produced at the time was sickly sweet, yet British Champagne aficionados and avid consumers had a taste for dry wines. In 1865, Bollinger began producing demi-sec Champagne, soon becoming a favorite of the British .
It was another great Champagne widow who took the Bollinger Champagne house to the level of prestige and volume that it is today. Widowed at 42, Elizabeth Law “Lily” Bollinger ran the house for 30 years, doubling production while maintaining Bollinger’s signature house style by focusing on the pinot noir grape. Millesima reports that the entire range of Champagnes, including one crafted from very old vines, is pinot noir dominant, giving her wines a robust, potent flavor and silky but firm mousse. .
Lily created Bollinger RD, a luscious blanc de noirs style with intense aromatics and notes of baked Madeleines, Amaretti cookies, rose petals, freesia, and honeyed apples. A perennial favorite of debonair secret agent James Bond, Bollinger honors each film premiere with a limited edition vintage James Bond 007 Champagne. Have your mimosa stirred, not shaken, to protect the precious bubbles.

Which Is More Expensive Prosecco Or Champagne
Without question, Prosecco is far cheaper to produce over Champagne simply down to the process of how it is made being more complicated and taking much longer. … Champagne is a far more complicated in its method of producing wine and will take longer to produce than most if not all those wines from Prosecco.
How To Make The Best Mimosa
- Start with cold ingredients, and keep them chilled. Warm mimosas are not nearly as refreshing.
- Serve mimosas in Champagne flutes. Their tall design helps retain bubbles. If you dont have those, use wine glasses.
- Pour in the sparkling wine first. Otherwise, the wine/orange juice mixture might overflow and make a mess.
- When pouring the wine, hold your glass at a slight tiltto preserve carbonation.
- Dont stir your mimosas! The pouring action alone will mix your drink, and stirring them will release more bubbles.
- To garnish or not to garnish? I like my mimosas as simple as possible, so I dont garnish my drinks. You could, however, dress up the rims of your glasses with an orange twist or a cute little orange wedge, like Ali does here.

How Do I Navigate The Different Styles Of Champagne
Champagne offers tremendous depth and variety, from drier, extra brut wines and fruit-forward rosés to niche demi-sec offerings, so I would encourage consumers to first explore entry-level Champagnes from different producers to learn the subtle nuances that fit their palate, says Coravin founder Greg Lambrecht. By doing this, he explains, youll start to become familiar with the various styles of Champagnefor example, Brut Nature, Brut, and Demi-Secwhich are generally defined by their dosage level, or how much sugar is added to the wine. These terms can be a bit confusing, as dry in English means not sweet, while the literal term for dry in French is sec, which is used to denote Champagnes on the sweeter end of the spectrum.
If you like bone-dry Champagnes, look for bottles that say Extra Brut or Brut Nature if you like something a little softer, plain old Brutthe most well-known and widely-available styleis a safe bet. Palates that lean sweeter should go for Extra-Sec , Sec, Demi-Sec, and Doux.

What Is Real French Champagne
French Champagne is pricey because sparkling wines can only be called champagne if they are grown and produced in the Champagne region of France. This, combined with the lengthy production process, makes champagne rather expensive, starting at around $40 per bottle in Australia.
Famous brands include Moet and Chandon, Tattinger, Pipers, Veuve, Dom Perignon.
