How To Make A Blue Lagoon Cocktail: Main Method
The Blue Lagoon cocktail is a shaken cocktail: meaning you shake it up in a cocktail shaker. This both cools the drink and dilutes it a bit. Its easy for this drink to taste a little watered down since its served with crushed ice. Weve taken care to develop this recipe so that it tastes refreshing and sweet tart, not watery. Heres what to do :
- Crush some ice: head to How to Crush Ice for our best method.
- Shake together the vodka, blue curacao, lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with a few handfuls ice.
- Strain it into a hurricane glass or a highball glass. The drink umbrella is optional, but fun!

To make this drink, have all the ingredients and tools on hand. Youll want to make and serve this drink quickly. After a few minutes, the layers will start to blend together.
Start with grenadine at the bottom, just pour it in, then fill the glass with ice. This has the highest sugar content and will sink to the bottom of any drink. By adding it first you are able to get a distinct layer between the red and white.
When making a tequila sunrise, which has a blurred line between the layers, you pour the grenadine down the side of the drink. For this cocktail, we want a crisp division of colors.
Next, shake lemonade and vodka in a shaker like this one to make the white layer. The key to getting the white layer to sit on top of the red layer is to gently pour the mixture over the back of a spoon. This layer is a little yellow from the lemonade but it looks more white when you add the blue on top.
Dumping the white layer into the glass will mix it with the red creating a pink drink. Delicious but not the look were going for.
This technique of pouring liquid over the back of a spoon takes practice, go easy on yourself and take your time. It probably wont look great the first time.
Use the same spoon pouring technique to add blue curacao for the final layer. Its helpful to use a measuring cup with a spout instead of a shot glass to pour the liquid. Some of the blue will mix with this white, but you will get a nice defined layer that will last a few minutes

History Of The Blue Lagoon Cocktail
This cocktail comes all the way from Paris! Created by Andy McElhone, who was the son of Harry McElhone. Harry opened Harrys New York Bar in Paris in 1911 which was famous during this heyday of Paris. Especially in the 1920s during the US Prohibition era.
He is credited with creating other famous cocktails such as the Bloody Mary , the Side Car and White Lady. Andrew Andy took over after his fathers passing and is credited with creating this exhilarating blue cocktail in 1972.
Optional Garnish Ideas: Orange slice or Lemon Slice.

How Strong Is The Blue Margarita
This blue margarita is made primarily of alcohol and, despite its alluring color, it is not a light drink. When made with 80-proof tequila and 60-proof curaçao, its alcohol content falls in the 23 percent ABV range. That’s about half the strength of a straight shot of tequila, so it’s best to take it easy with this cocktail.
How To Create A Layered Cocktail
Layering a drink starts with understanding the density of the liquids you are using. Essentially the liquid with the highest sugar content will sink to the bottom. The lighter the sugar content, the more the layer will float.
So for this red white and blue layered cocktail the grenadine, the red layer, is the densest with the highest sugar content.
Next up is the white-ish layer which, when poured correctly, will sit nicely on top of the red layer. This is a mixture of vodka and lemonade shaken with ice and strained into the glass.
Finally, the blue layer will float on top as the final layer in this festive drink.
Knowing the density of each layer is important, next you need to know how to pour the layers.

Blue Curaao Cocktail History
Looking back through vintage cocktail books to establish when blue curaçao first started to appear in cocktail recipes reveals the use of blue food colouring before a blue-coloured liqueur. For example, in Patrick Gavin Duffy’s 1934 Official Mixer’s Manual, the Blue Bird, Blue Moon and Blue Monday cocktails all call for “1 Dash Blue Vegetable Extract”. Indeed, “blue extract” also features in the Blue Bird in the first book I’ve found calling for blue curaçao, the 1937 Café Royal Cocktail Book.
This vintage book literally has pages of blue curaçao recipes, a whopping 22 different cocktails with an additional one with blue food colouring. The Café Royal Cocktail Book was written by William J. “Billy” Tarling and the only cocktail to use food colouring rather than the obviously then newly fashionable blue liqueur was created by his older brother Arthur Tarling, head bartender at London’s Café Royal.
I’ve read claims that in 1912, Bols launched a blue curaçao called Crème de Ciel after the success of the 1907 Miss Hook of Holland musical, the plot of which revolves around a secret recipe for a “Cream of the Sky” liqueur. Tellingly, the recipe for the Blue Skies cocktail in the Café Royal book features both “Blue Curaçao ” and “Crème of the Sky ” leading me to question if Crème de Ciel was indeed a blue curaçao. After all, why use two blue curaçaos in the same recipe?
Two of the cocktails above come from The Café Royal book, the Darlington and the Blue Lady.

How To Make This Paradise Cocktail
To make the colors of the rainbow, we first pour a part grenadine syrup into a 16 oz / 400 ml glass. Then fill the glass with ice cubes or crushed ice.
In a separate cup, you mix 4 oz / 160 ml pineapple juice with 2 oz / 80 ml Malibu. This mixture is poured over the glass with syrup and ice.
To create an orange layer, you can stir for a moment. Youll see that the red layer mixes with the yellow and then you get orange! The glass already seems full, but we promise you: the last layer still fits.
The last layer is the hardest. You mix 1 oz / 40 ml water with ½ oz / 20 ml blue curacao . You pour this very carefully over the yellow layer.
You will see that blue and yellow mix to green and the top layer remains beautifully blue. Voilà, your rainbow cocktail is ready! Serve with a lemon/lime slice or orange twist to finish it off.
Do you use orange juice and vodka? Then you pour the orange juice over the grenadine and mix the vodka with blue curacao for the top layer. So you dont use water in the recipe.
