Best: Kirkland Signature Irish Cream Liqueur

Vodka Tastings – Tito’s Vodka, Tower Vodka, Big Rock Vodka!

A lot of the “best” Costco liquors are considered so because they are indistinguishable from their name-brand counterparts while costing significantly less. What helps the Kirkland Signature Irish Cream Liqueur stand out from the pack is not only for its wallet-friendliness , but experts also find that flavor-wise it is better than the name-brand counterpart as it is “smoother, less harsh, and more balanced.”

At first whiff of Kirkland’s Irish Cream, you’ll pick up aromas of cocoa, cream, and of course Irish whiskey. As far as flavor goes, it’s incredibly smooth and very sweet. You’ll likely taste notes reminiscent of candy: chocolate, caramel, and hazelnut in particular. Given its inherent sweetness, most people enjoy Irish cream either chilled and served straight or over ice, but it’s also delicious poured into a cup coffee or in the middle of a a homemade Mudslide.

Kirkland Signature Blended Canadian Whiskey

The style and character of Canadian whisky distinguish it from neighboring styles to the south. Though similar to American bourbon whiskey they both use a significant quantity of corn in the production Canadian whisky has always contained a high percentage of rye, which is responsible for creating the signature flavor . The most popular brand of Canadian whisky is Crown Royal, and according to Forbes, it is one of the top-tasting brands as well. Fortunately, Kirkland Signature Blended Canadian Whisky shares comparable characteristics and flavors. It is full but not paunchy, and it doesn’t bite so much as it presents boldly.

Kirkland Signature Canadian Whisky is a solid option if you are a fan of whiskey from north of the border. Oak-cask aged for six years, the whisky integrates vanilla, cinnamon and clove spice, and toffee, per another Forbes review. Add that it costs a fraction of the named brand options , and we consider this a qualified choice for any bar cart. Thrillist doesn’t share as much enthusiasm, finding it a little thin and dry. Still, most agree that if you are a Canadian whisky fan, this is a solid option at a good price.

A Brief History Of Kirkland Vodka

While the origins of both varietals of Kirkland Vodka seem to be kept under lock and key, we do know a few things for certain. Kirklands French Vodka is sourced from the Gayant Distillery in France and, according to Vice, even uses the same water source.

This information was enough to convince quite a lot of people that Kirkland French Vodka and Grey Goose are actually the same.

While Grey Goose may not directly handle the bottling and distribution for Costco, it certainly seems that Kirklands French Vodka comes from pretty much the exact same place.

Vodka is no stranger to controversy, however. There is a debate to this day as to where the spirit itself even originated. Some say Poland, most say Russia, and a select few believe it was Sweden.

So its no surprise that today we still dont know exactly where Kirkland Vodka comes from. Fortunately, there is no debate on how vodka is defined. A clear, distilled alcoholic beverage made from neutral grains that is no less than 40% alcohol content.

So if your bottle says 70 proof, its not technically vodka. A common characteristic of the vodka distillation process is how many times it gets filtered. It is often considered that the more it is filtered, the smoother the final product will be.

Some brands refuse this logic and say that the natural minerals and elements found in the ingredients are considered a flavor component of the spirit and should therefore not be filtered out.

The markup at Costco is lower than other retailers, at 10 to 14 percent. At other liquor stores, markups are between 25 and 45 percent. Therefore, Costcos next bottle of wine will cost less at the store, and you will be able to get a much bigger bottle for the same price as smaller bottles elsewhere.

What Is Kirkland Vodka

The well-known Kirkland Vodka is distilled in the region of Cognac in France, and produced by Levecke Corporation in Mira Loma, California. It is made from 100% fine French wheat and pure artesian spring water from Gensac Springs of Massif Fountains. The craft is produced with classic distillation techniques applied to every premium ingredient used, which contribute to the rich, flavourful, and sweet vodka we all love. Plus, it is also gluten-free!

Kirkland is home of the famous vodkas: the Kirkland Signature American Vodka and the Kirkland Signature French Vodka . Both can be bought directly in Costco!

The American vodka is your cheap and basic go-to vodka. Its good for mixed drinks but it also works well alone if you want a thin and smooth finish. The second one is the controversial, Kirkland French Vodka, one of Costcos best sellers. This one is a bit pricier but still affordable. The vodka gets compared a lot to Grey Goose but if I were to describe it, Kirklands French Vodka is sweeter and has a brighter feel to it. Taste it yourself! Prices are listed below.

Kirkland Signature Blended Scotch Whiskey

A signature spirit of Scotland, Scotch whisky , is produced in the country’s northern region, normally in either Speyside or Islay. Scotch whisky makers from Islay use peat soil in the drying of the barley used to make Scotch whisky, per Distillery Trails. Peat gives the whisky style its specific wet, smoky, earthy quality. The organic material peat is one of the characteristics of every bottle of Kirkland Signature’s Blended Scotch whisky, leaving a forest floor and damp athletic sock aroma to the spirit.

An 80-proof spirit, as noted by the Whiskey Vault, Kirkland’s Scotch is relatively thin, lacking complexity, with a musty, loamy bouquet. At best, it is similar to Dewar’s White Label. This earthiness leads to candied apple and dried fruit flavors that produce an unexpected sweetness on the palate. However, it lacks the texture and density you would hope for in whisky. Whisky Advocate gives the whiskey an 84-point rating. Wine Enthusiast follows with an 86-point rating, agreeing that this bottle does produce the distinct peat note along with oak, likely from a short period of barrel aging and the heated bite of alcohol. If you buy this, your best bet is to add it to your cocktails instead of sipping straight.

Worst: Kirkland Signature 7

Kirkland Signature 7-Year Small Batch Bourbon simply misses the mark where other liquors sold at Costco hit it. It is rumored to be sourced from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort, KY, but, there’s also some proof that it may be manufactured by Jim Beam, and others claim it’s recently started being manufactured by George Dickel. Either way, reviewers agree that it tastes more like Jim Beam that is, it’s OK. Just OK.

At 51.5 percent alcohol by volume, it’s very “hot,” meaning it has that harsh, alcohol burn that generally turns people off from a liquor. And while it’s strong, it’s not complex at all. This 7 Year Small Batch Bourbon lacks the various sweet and spicy notes that make a spirit interesting. After all, that’s what people like about bourbon that while it’s strong up front, it generally mellows out on the palate to showcase other flavors, making it enjoyable to drink.

How To Drink Kirkland Vodka

Best price on Liquor Booze Costco | COME SHOP WITH ME

The best way to drink any vodka is certainly chilled. But one of the best things about vodka is its versatility. Its a flexible spirit that lends itself to drinks across the spectrum of flavor.

Whether you prefer a Bloody Mary or an Espresso Martini, youre going to want to reach for the same bottle to get your party started. If you prefer to let the flavor of the vodka shine through, then you absolutely cant go wrong with a classic Martini.

Theres a reason its James Bonds go-to cocktail. The original Martini, known as a Vesper, includes 1 part gin, 1 part vodka, and 1 part dry vermouth.

But more commonly youll find your request for a martini at your local bar to be a 2:1 vodka and dry vermouth cocktail served in a classic martini shell glass. Just make sure to tell them whether you prefer olives or a twist.

With its two different styles, one being distilled 6 times in France, and the other being distilled 5 times in America, you can make sure your martini is exactly to your liking.

With vodka continuously being one of the most popular spirits in the United States, its no surprise that Costco figured out how to get a piece of the action.

With Kirklands Signature French Vodka and Kirklands American Vodka, they have cornered a valuable piece of the vodka market.

Continuing in the Kirkland tradition, both spirits are surprisingly good, and they dont break the bank either. Kirkland Signature French Vodka is often being directly compared to top-shelf vodkas while coming in at less than half the price of most.

For that reason, it has become a recurring item on many Americans grocery lists.

Worst: Kirkland Signature Strawberry Margarita

The canned cocktail revolution is upon us and we’re pleased as Planter’s Punch. With access to so many high-quality ready-to-imbibe mixed drinks, the Kirkland Signature Strawberry Margarita sadly drinks like an afterthought. If you happen to be attending a Jimmy Buffett concert, this would be an ideal pre-game beverage with the assumption, of course, that since you’re paying actual money to hear “Cheeseburger in Paradise” live there’s no accounting for taste.

Let’s start with the positives: it comes in a double-sized 1.5 L bottle, plus it’s made with 100% cane sugar and real lime juice. As for the strawberry portion of the margarita, that falls under the “natural flavors” portion of the ingredients and the taste is a bit too sweet and artificial for our liking.

When it comes to the base liquor, you need to double-check the label. In some regions, the margarita is your standard gold tequila and triple sec version. But in other locations, the cocktail is spiked with inferior agave wine. At least if you’re going to cheap out, don’t anoint your product as “premium.” The bait-and-switch is like going to a Kansas City Chiefs game and instead of Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne is starting at quarterback.

Be it tequila or agave wine, this one isn’t a winner.

Can You Buy Alcohol At Costco Without A Membership

Lets address this first. Legal drinking age is not the only factor at play in buying alcohol at Costco. As I highlighted in my how to shop at Costco without a membership post, it appears that buying alcohol at Costco is one of the few exceptions where you may not need a membership to purchase. At a minimum, the following states have had laws in place that require shopping membership clubs to sell alcohol to the general public without membership:

  • Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Texas, Vermont

There are varying reports on whether Costco has adopted the same policy in other states. Your mileage may vary.

On to the aisle note that the Costco alcohol prices and selection may vary by location and by date.
