The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Are Premium Irish Whiskey Brands Worth It

The Sexton Whiskey, Irish Single Malt

There are many different brands of Irish whiskey, ranging from budget to premium. So, are premium Irish whiskey brands worth it?

Generally speaking, premium Irish whiskey brands are worth the extra money. They tend to use high-quality ingredients and undertake a longer aging process, which results in a smoother, more complex flavor.

In addition, premium brands often use traditional production methods, such as pot stills, which further contribute to the distinctiveness of their whiskeys.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, and there are some delicious budget Irish whiskeys out there. However, if youre looking for the best of the best, then youll likely want to stick with a premium brand.

Master Blender Alex Thomas

Alex Thomas, one of a few female master blenders in the industry, has spent decades honing her craft. The Sexton Single Malt is the result of her passion for whiskey, made from 100% Irish malted barley and triple-distilled for smoothness in copper pot stills.

Alex perfected a shorter 4 year aging process to create the bold taste and smooth finish that is unique to The Sexton. Consciously aged in Oloroso sherry butts to achieve a depth of flavor from the wine-soaked barrel that surpasses its years.

The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey Review

The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a new face on the Irish Whiskey market, but unlike most new faces its not a blend, but a sherried single malt which was honestly a bit shocking to see. I was first lured in with the crazy looking bottle and the macabre gothy label but it was the fact it was a sherried Irish single malt that voodood me to take it home.

Put out by Proximo spirits the distiller of The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey is unknown, but I have a pretty good idea who it is. Not too long ago Bushmills released a sherry cask single malt for its Steamship series and Proximo has been the owner of Bushmills since 2014. I cant help but think this comes from some of the same stocks.

Over the past 12 months, its been one of our missions to find some of the best under the radar drinks. Fortunately, and time for the new year, weve discovered another one, and its called The Sexton.

Differentiating oneself from the rest of the pack is tough, but the people behind The Sexton have done it. The bottle the Sexton comes in is quite beautiful. Its made from dark glass and what makes it stand out is its hexagonal shape. Another nice feature is the fonts used on the silver and gold labelling on the bottle which conjures up images of smoky bars in the 1800s and does look rather smart.

The Sexton StoryThe Sexton is a new Irish single malt whiskey. It was conceived in Northern Ireland and is the brainchild of Master Blender Alex Thomas who is one of the few female whiskey blenders in the world today.

A Bottle of The Sexton Irish Malt Whiskey

The Sexton is a recently released Irish whiskey that debuted in North America in 2018. It is produced from triple distilled 100% malted barley, and is aged in a former sherry butts. Its bottled at 40% ABV or 80 proof. The expression does not have an age statement, but according to the information sheet that accompanied the sample the whiskey is four years old.

The whiskey is bottled in an upscale looking black, hexagonal bottle. The label sports the upper section of a skeleton wearing a top hat, as well as a coach pulled by a skeleton horse with a skeleton coachman. The references to the skeletons are an association with the sexton name. A sexton is an officer of a church, congregation or synagogue charged with the maintenance of its buildings and/or the surrounding graveyard. In addition, sextons were often charged with the digging of graves. There is no explanation from the producer, however, for the selection of such a macabre branding.

The whiskey is distributed in North America by Proximo Spirits. Proximo is a division of Cuervo. It also happens to be the parent company of Bushmills. Several years ago, Bushmills released a triple distilled malt whiskey that had been matured in a combination of sherry butts and European oak casks. The Bushmills Sherry Cask was part of the companys Steamship Collection and was initially sold exclusively at a handful of travel retail stores at the Dublin and Belfast airports.

Gsn Review: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Five years ago, The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskeylaunched in the United States. The term Sexton is derived from the Medieval Latin word sacristanus meaning custodian of sacred objects and is used to describe the man who prepared the grave, the last man to witness the body before being laid to rest. The Sexton Single Malt challenges those to make choices every day that will add up to a life story worth telling.

At the helm, Master Blender Alex Thomas, one of the worlds few female whiskey blenders, has nearly 20 years honing her craft. Along the way, her fascination for the maturation phase of the whiskey making process led her to source the ideal Sherry casks for the liquid and create The Sexton.

Were using classic Irish single malt techniques to craft The Sexton, with only three ingredients of 100% malted barley, yeast and water from Ireland. But what makes us truly special is our maturation process. Were purposely aging our whiskey for four years in carefully selected casks to create a fresh, new-style single malt which is bold in personality yet extremely approachable, adds Thomas. In doing things differently we want to celebrate those who are also forging their own path and leaving their mark on the world.

Tasting Notes: Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Vital stats: 80 proof mash bill of 100 percent Irish malted barley aged in oloroso sherry casks about $25.

Appearance: Yellowish, brassy and bright, like the highlights your over-enthusiastic hair stylist talked you into but which dont really suit your face.

Nose: Full of fruit. Apricots, lemon and prunes . It closes with mild hard cheese andis that printer ink? Yes. Yes, it is.

Palate: The cheese on the nose continued on the palate for me. It doesnt taste like cheese as much as it tastes like its aftertaste. Or like the rind, on a wine-washed cheese. Theres no alcohol harshness on the palate my co-taster thought it was easy-drinking. He tasted a little sweetness from the sherry influence, but it didnt overpower: You wouldnt have tasted it unless you were looking for it, he said. But pretty much all I got was winey dairy.

    The Takeaway

I know I should like this. And I would like to say that I send only goodwill toward the sisterhood. But its like when Im in barre class: Some women are really just not my type. This isnt terrible, but its definitely not my favorite. I wanted to give it a 2, my co-taster said 3, so Ill split the difference.

And while that squat hexagonal bottle may look cool sitting on the shelf, unless you are upending it into a cauldron, its going to dribble everywhere.

Tasting NotesWhen smelling The Sexton, you will detect hints of spice, fruits, marzipan and dark chocolate. On the palate, youll discover a very mild sweetness that slowly fades away, honeyed malt and oils coupled with a gentle wood finish.

A Good Ghost Story In A Great Bottle: Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey

A sexton a person who looks after a church and churchyard, sometimes acting as bell-ringer and formerly as a gravedigger. What does this have to do with whiskey you ask? Well pull up a chair and get ready for a ghost storyOr just pour yourself a glass of Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey and create your own.

This single malt from the Irish Isle was inspired by a long tradition of distilling on the north coast of Ireland and is crafted by one of the only female blenders in the county. Classified as an old school recipe of only 3 ingredients Irish barley, water, and yeast, though this whiskey might seem simple, its a far cry from the traditional. Triple distilled in copper pot stills, this whiskey is then aged for 4 years in Oloroso sherry butts. This deliciously dark malt is then captured in a black hexagon bottle, adorned with a top hatted skeleton cameo. The back of the bottle details some truly ghoulish images of fresh graves and cool misty mornings, leaving you ready to uncork and enjoy the balance of rich dried fruits, notes of oak and deadly smooth finish. Can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or six feet under.

The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey Review Overall

Sweet and far denser than I would have thought based on the proof The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey is rather intense for what it is and Im really enjoying it. Im going to have a hard time not killing this entire bottle before St. Paddys day. The aroma is malty fruity with a copper sweetness and the palate shows heavy with sherry and malt.

The overall sense I get from this whiskey is that some high-quality sherry casks, though not first-fill, were used here. Besides aging a bit longer, the only way they could make The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey better is if they didnt skimp on it and bottled it at least at 46% and non-chill filtered. I know the tide is turning in Irish Whiskey to deliver their amazing malts in a purer form, but its a pity to see whiskeys that could be stellar diluted along the way.
