The Glenlivet 12 Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky #40

For many years afterwards he had to carry a pair of pistols to protect himself and his family from his aggrieved erstwhile colleagues, the moonshiners, but the quality of his spirit quickly made him and his distillery famous and set a precedent that sparked the birth of the industry as we know it today.

Famously the first legal Scottish distillery in Speyside after owner George Smith took the brave step of applying for the first licence to distil following the Excise Act of 1823, Glenlivet became so synonymous with the best quality that the company was forced to take legal action in the 1880s to prevent its rivals passing off their own wares as ‘the Real Stuff’. Despite the Smith family winning the exclusive right for their product to be known as ‘The’ Glenlivet, dozens of other distilleries persisted with the usage of the Glenlivet suffix for decades afterwards.

Although the distillery’s standard 12yo epitomises the kind of soft, smooth, lighter style of Speyside malts beloved of so many whisky fans, Glenlivet’s spirit has also proven itself to be more than capable of withstanding long years of wood-ageing. The ongoing Cellar Collection was created to showcase some of the superb older malts in the distillery’s archives, and some extremely old sherried vintages going back to the 1930s have been bottled by Gordon & Macphail.

Keep it pure

I grew curious about St. Germain web I saw posts about cocktails made with it. It was a little pricey for something I might rather pour down the drain, but I took a chance on it. With one sip of it, I knew that mixing it with more booze to make a cocktail was a complete waste of it. St. Germain is sweet, florally, earthy, warm and soothing all at the same time. Don’t muddy it with other liquors. It is a marvelous after dinner sip. My husband has a little bit every night. It has also proven a lovely tonic for an upset stomach. Keep it pure!

Why Is Macallan Expensive

Macallan uses premium ingredients. It starts with the barley thats specially grown for the Macallan Distillery and ends with the aging barrels. The barley itself costs about 30-40% more than other whiskies. Because it costs more to make, it costs more to purchase, but its well worth the investment for the consistent quality they produce.

Screening For Potential Adulteration

Refilling and fabrication or tampering of branded Scotch whiskies are types of Scotch whisky adulteration that diminishes brand integrity, consumer confidence, and profitability in the Scotch industry. Deviation from normal concentrations of major constituents, such as alcohol congeners, provides a precise, quantitative method for determining authenticity of Scotch whiskies. Over 100 compounds can be detected during counterfeit analysis, including phenolics and terpenes which may vary in concentration by different geographic origins, the barley used in the fermentation mash, or the oak cask used during ageing. Typical high-throughput instruments used in counterfeit detection are liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

After a recent expansion and refurb it is one of the most modern distilleries in Speyside with a vast Briggs mash tun which sends clear wort to wooden washbacks. Distillation, which is slow, takes place in two stillhouses, in seven sets of stills.

George Smiths greatest achievement wasnt simply the taking out of a licence, but his decision to make a new style of whisky. By the 1860s, The Glenlivet was noted for producing a spirit with a pineapple note, evidence that the floral, estery character seen today has a long history and one which broke with the heavy, dense, rich styles prevalent at that time.

The Glenlivet Captain’s Reserve: Cognac Cask Finished Whisky From Speyside

The Glenlivet Captains Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky

In recent years, Scotch whisky distillers have been experimenting with finishing their spirit in casks that have previously held a wide range of other liquids.

Glenlivet has recently announced the release of what it claims is the first major single malt finished in Cognac casks. That isnt completely accurate, Bruichladdichs Cuvee 640 Eroica was finished in a Cognac cask for 3 years after spending 18 years in an ex-bourbon barrel.

It is true, however, that maturing whisky in Cognac barrels is relatively rare. Moreover, the Glenlivet release will be part of the distillerys core range and not a special bottling, as was the usual practice from other distilleries in the past.

The expression is titled Captains Reserve. It was named in honor of Captain William Smith Grant a great grandson of the distillerys founder, George Smith, and a decorated British military officer who served in France during World War I.

After the war, Captain Smith inherited the distillery and played a significant role, both in the Glenlivet company, and the Scotch whisky industry as a whole.

The expression carries no age statement. Its a blend of ex-bourbon barrel and sherry butt matured whisky, which has undergone an additional finish of at least 6 months in a Limousine cask that was used to mature Cognac.

The expression carries no name statement and is bottled at a 40% ABV.
