Notes About Creamy Hot Buttered Rum
- Be sure to let butter soften at room temperature so that it creams easily with the sugars.
- This recipe uses vanilla ice cream so the base is rich and creamy.
- Add as much or as little dark rum as you like we dont judge.
- If your ice cream base is lumpy, microwave it in a microwave-safe bowl in 30 second intervals, stirring in between until smooth.
- For a different version of this cocktail, try substituting in chocolate liqueur for the rum. Check out this post about the 7 best chocolate liqueurs of 2019!
- The base for this buttered rum with ice cream stays soft in the freezer, making it easy to scoop. Use an ice cream scoop like this one!
- Use as little or as much of the sweet, buttery, sugary, ice cream base as you like. Try not to eat it with a spoon, or at least not all of it that way. Its so yummy that its hard not to sneak a spoonful or two while serving.
- This easy hot buttered rum makes a large vat of base for the freezer. It serves a crowd at a large party, or it also keeps in the freezer for several months in an airtight container.

The History Of Hot Buttered Rum
Lord knows I tried, but the earliest I could find this drink mentioned was in the 1826 Pennsylvanian Historical society. The titles of most books that mention hot buttered rums were like the domestic such and such, housewife so and so, or friendly neighbor such and such. They all revolved around the house and made no mention of going out to a tavern, which made me think this was a homemade cocktail. This ultimately means its history is a bit muddy, and there is no single canon recipe, so take this recipe, modify it, and make it your own have fun.

Which Whiskey To Choose
You really won’t know which whiskey you like best in the Hot Buttered Whiskey until you try them. Almost any whiskey will be good and many will be great. While you have the batter in the fridge, experiment with a few different brands and styles. There’s sure to be one in your list of favorites that outshines all the others.
Try it with a sweeter bourbon if you like a softer, sweeter drink.
Bring out more spice notes with a high-proof bourbon or a great rye whiskey.
Looking for a super smooth taste? Opt for one of the great blended Canadian whiskies.
Follow the line of thought from the Irish Coffee recipe and pour Irish whiskey.

What Does Hot Buttered Rum Taste Like
This is a fantastic drink spiced well with great texture and flavor. The butter doesnt come across as heavy or greasy. It adds a nice creamy mouthfeel similar to gum syrup, egg whites, or a full-bodied wine. This drink is not weak either. You can feel the warm rum but the light creamy butter and pumpkin pie spices make it pleasant and not too strong. When I was younger, I used to think of this drink as more of an overly sweet, almost milkshake-like, but it doesnt have to be. And again, since there is no authentic single canon recipe for this, the recipe I have here is an amalgamation of older recipes I liked. The sweetness and spice toned down a bit with more rum. The 2 ounces of rum helps keep the drink from feeling flat, and the sugar and spice level makes it, so the drink tastes like a cocktail and not a dessert. The hot buttered rum batter is great on anything. I sometimes add it to coffee, on toast, biscuits, pancakes, etc. Add a little more sugar, spice, or butter if you feel the drink needs it. Here is the recipe for the batter, but feel free to check out my article on Spiced Butter Batter.

How Strong Is The Hot Buttered Whiskey
With all these whiskey options as well as the unknown volume of water, we’re going to have to do some serious estimating on the Hot Buttered Whiskey’s alcohol content. To do so, let’s assume that you pour an 80-proof whiskey and use just 3 ounces of hot water. This would make the drink somewhere in the neighborhood of 13 percent ABV .

To Make Hot Buttered Whiskey
Now that you have the batter, it’s time to make the drink! This is the easy part and the point where your hard work pays off.
Slice off a good dollop of the batter and add it to a warmed mug or Irish coffee glass.
Add the whiskey and fill with hot water.*
Serve and enjoy.
*How much water? You want to create a smooth, rich consistency and avoid watering down the drink. Most of the time, you will use 3 to 4 ounces of water and you don’t need to fill the glass all the way . Instead, begin with about twice as much water as whiskey, see how you like it, and adjust from there.

Old Fashioned Hot Buttered Rums
In my opinion, there is nothing more charming than an old family tradition passed down through generations and continually celebrated by the old and the young. In my family, the Soldo family, that tradition would be Old Fashioned Hot Buttered Rum at Christmas time. One sip of this sweet creamy brew and newcomers are asking for the recipe before they even get to the bottom of the cup.
This is one of those traditional Christmas drinks that you need to try out! Made with vanilla ice cream, and loads of butter, brown sugar, powdered sugar, and passionately kissed with a shot of brandy and rum, this holiday drink will warm you up all the way down to your toes.
Now, for those who prefer to go light on the alcohol, you can adjust the shots to your liking. We haven’t forgotten the kiddos in the festive holiday tradition. In our family, the 20 and under crowd get to enjoy a “Hot Buttered” drink right along with the adults.
It’s an irresistibly delicious treat for the entire family.
The star ingredient in Hot Buttered Rums isn’t necessarily the quality of the alcohol, but rather the sweet buttery goodness that makes this drink worthy of more than one visit to the hot buttered rum bar. Cheers and Merry Christmas! Thanks for the recipe mom!

Hot Buttered Rum Ingredients
The ingredients for a Hot Buttered Rum are simple and maybe things you already have on hand.
- Dark Rum: First, you will need dark rum. Make sure you find a great dark rum, it is aged longer and has a richer flavor than light rum which is better fitting for a Hot Buttered Rum cocktail. Light rum has a sweeter flavor which is better fitting for cocktails like Bahama Mama and Strawberry Daiquiri.
- Butter: Next, you will need a tablespoon of butter. In our house we tend to keep unsalted butter on hand because it is what we use in all of our cookie and baking recipes. But either will work.
- Brown Sugar: You need a teaspoon of brown sugar. We used light brown sugar, but dark brown sugar will also work.
- Hot Water: Finally, you need 4 ounces of hot water.

Why This Recipe Works
This homemade hot buttered rum batter requires just a few ingredients and is so easy to prepare.
Because it makes such a large batch it is much cheaper than any store bought version and it is so much better.
There is no cooking required. It is simply whipped into a batter. Then you store it in jars and scoop out as much as you want to use.
To serve it you simply add a scoop of batter to a mug, add boiling water to melt the butter and sugar and then you add a good spiced rum.
This hot buttered rum mix makes a great gift. Simply add some to a nice jar and decorate it with a cinnamon stick and some pretty ribbon. I usually attach a little card with the instructions to make the drink.
Make A Batch Of Batter
- Mix together 2 cups brown sugar, 1 cup unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon each of ground nutmeg and allspice using an electric mixer until everything is blended together. You’ll have enough batter for about 24 drinks.
- To make a drink, pour a shot of dark rum into a mug, add a tablespoon of the batter, then top it with hot water. For a slightly sweeter drink, add a teaspoon of honey.
- Store the batter in a well-sealed jar in the refrigerator until needed. It will be ready for the first drink after about an hour and keeps well for a few weeks. Many hot buttered rum fans prefer to form their batter into a log. This makes it easy to slice off one piece at a time whenever you want a drink. To do this, place the batter onto a sheet of plastic wrap and use it to shape a long roll that’s about 2 inches thick. Wrap it up tightly, place it in an airtight container or plastic zip-close bag, and store it in the refrigerator it will also freeze for up to three months.
- The big-batch batter mix is fantastic on its own when topped with hot water. Skip the liquor entirely, add a little cream if you like, and 2 teaspoons of rum extract to one serving, and you’ll have a warm, soothing mocktail.
