The Real Reason Jack Daniels Is Called Old No 7
As the best-selling American whiskey in the world, Jack Daniels is a bar-cart staple. And the easy-to-recognize, classic logo design has remained essentially the same since the founder created it himself at the end of the 19th century.
While the label is otherwise straightforward and simple, theres one vague element of the famous logo that has led to debate among aficionados. Centered near the top of the black and white label is the curious phrase Old No. 7, leading to a variety of theories about what Daniel meant with the inclusion of the wording.
The mystery of Old No. 7 is one that has surrounded Jack Daniels for over 150 years, says Svend Jansen, the brands public relations director. Its the No. 1 question asked by visitors to the Jack Daniels Distillery.

- Another Breach: Years before the leaked draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, Mr. Schenck said he had been tipped off to the outcome of a landmark contraception case.
- Trumps Tax Returns: The justices cleared the way for a House committee to obtain former President Donald J. Trumps tax returns, refusing his request to block their release.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear arguments in the case, Jack Daniels Properties v. VIP Products, No. 22-148, in March and issue a decision by June.
At least one other court has rejected a trademark infringement claim against a dog toy, though without bringing the First Amendment into it.
In 2007, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, Va., ruled in favor of a company called Haute Diggity Dog, saying it was entitled to sell Chewy Vuiton dog toys that looked like miniature Louis Vuitton handbags.
Judge Paul V. Niemeyer, writing for a unanimous three-judge panel, said the toy immediately conveys a joking and amusing parody.
The furry little Chewy Vuiton imitation, as something to be chewed by a dog, pokes fun at the elegance and expensiveness of a Louis Vuitton handbag, which must not be chewed by a dog, he wrote, adding: The dog toy irreverently presents haute couture as an object for casual canine destruction. The satire is unmistakable.
Rebecca Tushnet, a law professor at Harvard, said humor should count in the chew toy case now before the justices.

Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee whiskey and was named No.7 by “Mr Jack” himself in 1887 no one knows why.
Some say Jack was honouring his seven girlfriends, others that it was the 7th recipe but one of the most plausible explanations to the Old No.7 brand is the story of the missing seven barrels. In 1904, the company shipped seven barrels of Jack Daniel’s whisky to St Louis, Missouri for the World Fair. They were sent via Tullahoma on the railroad but reports were telegraphed back saying the railroad company had lost the seven barrels. So another seven were shipped, but in the meantime the railroad found the first seven, so they marked them ‘Old Number Seven’, so the barrels would not be confused when the new seven barrels arrived. The strength of Old No.7 used to vary, with bottlings at 40, 43 and 45 alc./vol. according to different markets with the U.S. mostly at 43% and Europe at 40%. With the onset of globalisation there was a need to consolidate, hence since 2010 the strength has been standardised across all markets at 40% alc./vol.
Jack Daniel’s Old No 7 Tennessee Whiskey
Established by Jasper Newton Daniel in 1866, the Jack Daniel’s distillery was the first establised distillery in the USA. It’s based in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
Through this experience, of over 150 years, Jack Daniel’s has won numerous awards , and become known the world over.
They also take pride in the process, which finishes only when the master distiller says it’s ready. They mellow the whiskey through over 3 metres of sugar maple charcoal. Once completed, its then allowed to rest in handcrafted barrels of Jack Daniels’ own making, maturing until it achieves the taste which is known and loved..
The result is a whiskey with a balanced nose, containing a sweet vanilla aroma which is joined by oak notes. On the palate this follows through with the flavours balancing mid-palate between a sweetness and the oak obtained from the maturation.

Celebrating Modern Day Whiskey Honoring The History
Its been 100 years or so since the Jack Daniel Distillery released a whiskey of 10 years of age or greater. Evolving Jack Daniels past aged-stated whiskey process, these Tennessee Whiskey barrels have been aging in the Buzzards Roost of our barrelhouse, and methodically relocated to the lower floors of different barrel houses to extend the aging process for the last 10 summers. The extreme weather variation at different locations in the barrel houses along with longevity in our handmade oak barrels creates an intense, unique character of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey.

I think it gets a lot of stick because it’s popular, but it’s popular for a reason.I think that reason is that it’s inoffensive. If you’ve tried nicer bourbons or scotch then you will see the difference – it’s just “watery” to me.. I drank a bottle of it to see what it was all about, won’t get another but it’s not like it’s awful..

I always taste a hint of banana when I drink this. I am a beginner whisky drinker but I always sip mine neat. This is the only whisky that gives me a headache the next day. Banana note and stringent cough medicine taste/feel in my mouth. If this is the only whisky available, I will drink a different spirit or not drink. I despise Jack Daniels.

This is and always been my tipple, Ive been using The Whiskey Exchange, forever and I wont change. Service is fantastic.

Everyone should try Jack Daniel’s. Then try some good single malt whisky, Bunnahabhain, Lagavulin, or even something like Glenmorangie will do the trick. Then you’ll know the difference between good whisky and crap. I pour this down the drain when I see a bottle. If I am compelled to drink it, I hold my nose. It is an abomination.

Here’s To Colorful Beginnings
Jack Daniels is known for being a well-crafted, smooth sippin Tennessee Whiskey. You dont last for over 150 years if youre not a quality product, after all. Weve become known for something else along the way too: our iconic black and white label. But what people may not know is that the history of our label wasnt always so black and white.
Some time before 1904 our bottles were a rather unexpected shade of green with an eye-catching gold trim. And as unusual as that may seem, its just one of the many labels in Old No. 7s past. You have to be patient to make whiskey, and it seems that Jack took his time landing on the tried-and-true black label we know today. This is the first in our series of Legacy Edition Bottles. Each label we release will celebrate the unique, slightly mysterious history of Old No. 7.
Jack Daniels Old No7 Black Label
At Jack Daniels, things are done a little differently, which is what gives the Jack Daniels brand a distinctive character. At Jack Daniels whisky, they charcoal mellow their whiskey drop by drop then let it age in, their own, specially handcrafted barrels. What makes it special is that there is no specific calendar. The Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is ready only when their tasters say it is.
Similar to bourbon, this Tennessee whisky is made with the additional step of charcoal filtering the unaged whiskey. Known as the Lincoln County process, the mellowing is done by dropping the spirit through a vat of sugar maple charcoal before going into the barrels.
Just like Jack Daniel himself did, this Tennessee Whiskey is judged using the senses. In fact, more than a century later, their whiskey is still judged the same way. By the way it looks, by the way it smells and, of course, by the way it tastes.
Particularly in Tennessee, the name Jack Daniel is synonymous with whiskey. The Jack Daniels Old No 7 Black Label, also known as Old No 7, JD or Jack, is the best selling whiskey in the world. Easily distinguishable from every other whiskey, it is a signature brand in many households.
As for Jack Daniels Black Label reviews, on the nose, the Jack Daniels Black label offers gentle aromas of caramel, vanilla and butterscotch. As it opens up in the whiskey glass, a hint of wood will become more obvious and toffee notes will begin to appear.

Strictly Sinatra When Sipping This Whiskey
I cant think of anything else than the movie Strictly Sinatra. It pops into my head while sipping JD No. 7. Although I like to drink my whiskies neat, not the way Sinatra did. Maybe just a few drops of water. Im not going to lie, I still dont like this whiskey too much. Im a big fan of Sinatra, but it still doesnt help me to fall in love for this drink. I do believe that once in a while you have to try the things you dont like that much. To help you appreciate the better stuff even more. Thats how you feel more alive. I know this sounds crazy but thats why I love and hate Jack Daniels Old No. 7!
I have to admit Old No. 7 isnt as bad as I recalled. Its been a while since I last tried it. And the bad experiences as a teenager still haunted me. Luckily my palate has become accustomed to bold or even harsh flavors. Jack Daniels is still a heavy character, which I give credit to them achieving it with only 40% ABV. But it doesnt feel as harsh as it used to feel, when first experiencing it as a teenager. My love for sturdy rye whiskies probably helps me understand this Tennessee dram. What I dont understand is the low rye percentage in Jacks recipe. How can it taste so bold without heavy rye influence?

Jack Daniels Bonded Tennessee Whiskey Review
Im not the biggest JD fan, so I approached this Jack Daniels Bonded Tennessee with some trepidation. Ive never liked the original Old No. 7 or the Gentleman too much. I have enjoyed some of the single barrels but they vary so wildly in quality so Ive been hesitant to put any money down on one, though that might be changing.
Between my general ambivalence towards Jack as a whiskey and the crazy swings between amazing and disgusting in their SiBs, its fair to say Im a tad gun-shy of new JD products. So with all of that history in mind, I poured this Bonded Jack Daniels and cautiously sat down for this review.
Now, lets get to drinkin and see what I found in my glass.
The Lincoln County Process
One of the defining features in the production of Jack Daniel’s whiskey is the Lincoln County Process. During this process, maple timbers are carefully burned to create pellets of charcoal. These pellets are then filled into vats, through which freshly-distilled Jack Daniel’s is then filtered in order to remove remaining impurities, impart flavour and achieve the whiskey’s famed mellow mouthfeel. Only once the spirit has undergone this traditional process is it filled into quality oak barrels for ageing.

WASHINGTON The next frontier in First Amendment law at the Supreme Court involves a trademark dispute over a chew toy for dogs shaped like a liquor bottle.
The justices agreed last month to decide the fate of the Bad Spaniels Silly Squeaker dog toy, which looks a lot like a bottle of Jack Daniels but with, as an appeals court judge put it, lighthearted, dog-related alterations.
The jokes are scatological. The words Old No. 7 Brand Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey on the bottle are replaced on the toy by the Old No. 2, on your Tennessee carpet. Where Jack Daniels says its product is 40 percent alcohol by volume, Bad Spaniels is said to be 43 percent poo.
A tag attached to the toy says it is not affiliated with Jack Daniel Distillery.
Trademark cases generally turn on whether the public is likely to be confused about a products source. In the Bad Spaniels case, a unanimous three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, said the First Amendment requires a more demanding test when the challenged product is expressing an idea or point of view.
The Iconic Tennessee Whiskey Brand Successfully Embraces A Single
Where its from: Jack Daniels, the iconic Tennessee whiskey brand that crafted a standout American malt earlier this year as part of its new Triple Mash expression
Why were drinking this: For the fifth special release of their single barrel products, Jack Daniels goes into an entirely new direction: Theyre utilizing a 100% malted barley grain bill. And then finishing the whiskey for two additional years in sherry casks.
If that sounds like another style of whiskey , well, not quite. We were never trying to recreate what theyre doing in Scotland, says Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniels Master Distiller. This is not a Scotch style, this is a malt whiskey unique to Jack Daniels and done in a U.S. way.
Their new Bonded line is a standout but can it compete with the legacy of Old No.7?
The charcoal mellowing and use of Jack Daniels proprietary yeast along with the initial aging of the whiskey in new, charred American white oak barrels in Tennessee does position the product as, yes, something unique in a U.S. way. Still, even Fletcher admits he wasnt sure what he had.
This was outside of our comfort zone, he says. Its not gonna be what people expect from a bourbon or a Tennessee whiskey release.
Our sample came in at 105.7 proof.
