Jack Daniels is called a Tennessee Whiskey, not a bourbon, and there seems to be some confusion heated debate regarding its actual classification. Although the liquor appears to technically qualify as a bourbon, many people, including the distiller, take a pretty firm stance on the term Tennessee Whiskey.
What constitutes Bourbon?
There are some basics in the production of whiskey that will classify the liquor as a bourbon:
- The product must be produced in the United States although Kentucky tends to be associated with the birthplace of bourbon, it can be produced in any state.
- The Mash Bill, meaning the types and amounts of grains used in creating the wort, which is then distilled into the whiskey, must be at least 51% corn.
- The spirit must be aged in new, charred oak barrels
- Specific levels of alcohol, or proof, must be followed going into and out of the aging barrels. The finished bourbon must be at least 80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume, going into the bottle.
Jack Daniels, which is produced in the United States, has a mash bill of 80% corn, is aged in new, charred, white oak barrels for at least two years and is bottled at 80 proof, certainly seems to qualify as a bourbon.
So what sets Jack apart?
Tennessee distilleries are pretty firm in the idea that the Lincoln County Process creates a unique Tennessee Whiskey, and is not a bourbon. Unlike Bourbon, the United States government does not have a specific classification for Tennessee Whiskey.

Tennessee and bourbon whiskey are almost identical. Both are considered American whiskey. They distillate to not more than 80% ABV, have their own rules and regulations regarding their production, and are made in the same process.
They also use almost the same mash bill with 51% corn , rye, and barley and go through a charred new oak barrel to mature, but their concentrations must not exceed 62.5% ABV. Both spirits are also bottled at 40% ABV or more.
Bourbons can be made anywhere in the United States of America, which still qualifies Jack Daniels as a bourbon whiskey. However, Tennessee whiskeys can only be made in the State of Tennessee, which sets it apart from bourbon.
Another thing that sets it apart from the bourbon is its additional production process of charcoal mellowing. Its charcoal-filtered concentration gives a more robust and bolder flavor. Jack Daniels products are slowly filtered through sugar maple charcoal.

Not that being called bourbon is bad. Bourbon-Whiskey is made according to a very high standard of quality. A standard that Jack Daniels meets and then does it one better.
- A bourbons grain bill must be at least 51% corn. Jack meets that as well. Using a fine grade of yellow corn in its mash.
- A bourbon must be distilled at no more than 160 proof, or 80% alcohol by volume. Jack is well under that. It comes over the still at 140 proof, or 70% alcohol.
- A bourbon must enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof, or 62.5% alcohol by volume. And Jack does just that.
- Bourbon must also be bottled at no less than 80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume. Jack Daniels Old No. 7 and Gentleman Jack are both 80 proof or 40% alcohol. While Jack Daniels Single Barrel is more robust in character and flavor and is bottled at a higher proof.
- Unlike some other whiskies, bourbon contains no artificial coloring or flavoring. The same is true of Jack. Nothing artificial. We draw all of our color and most of our flavor from our barrel.
- Bourbon must be matured in new, charred-oak barrels. Jack too only uses its barrels one-time. Because its with the first fill that a barrel imparts its most intense flavor and character.

This mellows out the distilled spirit, removing many of the congeners and lending a richness to the whiskey.
