How Many Carbs In Rum What You Should Know
June 28, 2011·Lynn Terry·
Youll notice that rum bottles dont have nutrition facts, and if you go searching online for something like how many carbs in rum? youll get a wide variety of answers.
Which one is true? Is Bacardi Select 0 carb, or is it 1 carb per ounce? I still have no idea, but straight rum is very low carb if not zero carb.
I recently bought a bottle of Bacardi Select myself, along with a bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum both after a quick search brought up low carb forums stating that rum was a no / low carb alcohol.
The closest I have come to a straight answer is this fact that originally came from the Captain Morgan website : Captain Morgan® Original Spiced Rum contains approximately 75 calories per 1 1/4 oz serving size, 0 grams of fat and .4 grams of carbohydrates.
No worries in my book its obviously a very low carb alcohol, and one I like, so Im okay with not knowing the exact carb count. That said, there IS something you should think seriously about before mixing a drink if youre on a low carb diet
The Alcohol Stall
When youre eating low carb, you generally lose weight very fast. Noticing pounds lost almost daily even, if not weekly. But when you drink, even low carb alcohol, you get something called the alcohol stall.
As long as you know that upfront, and dont mind, theres no real harm having a Rum & Diet Coke now and then, or my new personal favorite: Rum & hazelnut coffee.
No Flavoring No Carbs
Vodka and rum are distilled spirits, which means they only contain alcohol and have zero carbs. So, instead of skipping the cocktails and heading straight for the wine or beer, think twice. Five ounces of wine has a carb count of 5, while 12 ounces of beer has 11. Champagne has 1.6 grams , while light beer has 7 grams.
As a general rule of thumb, flavored vodkas with a proof of 80 or above are carb-free.

Increased Stress And Loneliness
There are certain conditions that may put you at higher risk for alcohol use disorder. Isolation and stressincluding mass stress are two factors that have been studied by researchers. It is possible that while isolation and stress may increase the compulsion to overdrink, drinking too much during these times may lead to increased stress and potentially increased loneliness.
Although alcohol temporarily dampens the brain and bodys response to stress, feelings of stress and anxiety not only return, but worsen, once the alcohol wears off. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can cause adaptations in the brain that intensify the stress response. As a result, drinking alcohol to cope can make problems worse and one may end up drinking to fix the problem that alcohol caused.
George Koob, PhD, NIAAA Director
A series of studies was published in the years following the 9/11 attacks in New York City. Researchers found that increased exposure to news reports about the incident plus a past history of drinking problems predicted heavier drinking in the year after the event. They also determined that the intensity of exposure to 9/11 had longlasting effects, with greater exposure to the attack associated with binge drinking even five to six years later.
Additional studies have concluded that when people are under higher levels of stress, boredom, isolation, financial uncertainty, and job insecurity, they may respond by drinking heavily.

Malibu Is Distilled In Barbados Probably
There is some rum in Malibu, and that spirit is distilled in the Caribbean at West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd. Though in truth, tracking down exactly where Malibu is distilled isnt easy. But the West Indies distillery itself has a dead website, and Malibu representatives did not respond to requests for clarification.
Use 100% Unsweetened Cranberry Juice
In our cranberry cocktails, we prefer using 100% unsweetened cranberry juice. Make sure to look for this when youre shopping! Heres a little more about how to find it and why its great in a Malibu Bay Breeze:
- Avoid sweetened cranberry juice, aka cranberry juice cocktail. This is what was used in cranberry cocktails of the past, but its got lots of added sugar. These days you can find bottes marked with 100% juice or unsweetened cranberry juice.
- Unsweetened juice makes a balanced drink. Malibu Coconut Rum has a lot of added sugar, and pineapple juice is very sweet. So using unsweetened juice makes a great balance.
- It also affects the layers in the drink. Keep reading for why!

Recipe Tips For This Fruity Mixed Drinks Recipe:
- Use FRESH limes rather than bottled lime juice. The oils in the rind help increase the flavors of this drink
- Use FRESH or frozen strawberries. The results of this recipe rely on fresh or unsweetened frozen berries. Do not use strawberry drink syrup like some people use with smoothies. I have heard of this but it will be awful in this recipe.
- To keep your drink chilled longest:
- Set your glasses in the fridge or freezer 15 to 30 minutes ahead of making your daiquiri.
- Freeze the strawberries at least 30 minutes.
- Chill the lime and rum 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

When you think of Malibu, you probably dont think of the Royal Crown. Jago also went on to develop Johnnie Walker Blue.
