On the nose: This is a fruit bomb. I get light to medium aromas of apples, pears, starfruit, honey, caramelized pineapples, toffee, butterscotch, cinnamon, blueberry syrup and cloves.

In the mouth: Also a fruit bomb. Like on the nose, I get light tastes of apples with skin, pears with skin, starfruit, honey, starapple, apple cider, soursop and pineapples.

Pours a muted golden hue with solid legs, lacks brightness but still manages to bear a look of intensity. Aroma is complex yet mild. Springtime floral notes jump out first with honeysuckle and elderflower in the lead. There is some fresh sawdust as well as light, tannic fruit. The aroma and appearance whisper more than they scream.

The first sip is full of flavor, however, and brings a schizophrenic melange of tastes to the palate. A sweetness underlies the whole experience while hints of cashew, honey, apricot, and even white chocolate exist here. Heat and viscosity make themselves known here, but neither dominate. A bit messy, but hard to dislike.

Nose Restrained and a little closed with aromas of vanilla, honey and some subtle citrus notes.
Palate Light and soft with delicate flavours of vanilla, citrus and stem ginger. A touch of sappy oak towards the finish. More Bourbon cask character than expected.
Finish Clean but quite quick. A very easy going, session-style of whiskey.

Glendalough Double Barrel Whiskey Overall Thoughts And Score

Meh. One of the two casks isnt doing this whiskey any favors, or maybe its the grain whiskey itself. I dont know, but I cant get into this one as a sipper. However, it does make a decent Tipperary and adds a bit of a chalky cocoa note to an otherwise sweet and herbal drink. So its not completely without merit.

Theres obviously a drinker this aligns with out there, but it isnt me. The more I sipped of this Glendalough Double Barrel Whiskey, the more I felt like it was missing something and came through on the hollow side.

On the nose: Theres a persistent medium heat that goes away after a few minutes. Behind that are lots of medium fruit aromas. I get a creamy but short and messy mix of marzipan, honeydew melon, cantaloupes, cherries, honey, starfruit, butterscotch, and figs.

In the mouth: The creaminess is gone, but its fruitier than on the nose. Theres also a lot less ethanol heat but it nips you at the end. I get light and round tastes of honeydew melons, jammed cherries, vanilla, muscovado sugar, jammed berries, starfruit, star apples, butterscotch, nutmeg, cloves and honey.

Aged in x Bourbon casks followed by a spell in Spanish Oloroso casks, Glendalough’s NAS ‘Double Barrel’ offers clean, bright and fruity aromas reminiscent of vanilla, caramel fudge, dried mango and fresh fruit slice. The palate is fuller and richer than you’d expect with good body and well-defined grain flavours including vanilla wafer biscuit, caramelised fruits, milk chocolate, cloves and sprinklings of pepper. Priced right for a quality, easy-drinking Irish grain. 42% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews… The single grain category gains another brother. This was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, finished in Spanish oloroso sherry wood before being reduced with Wicklow mountain water. The nose oozes caramel, browned apple, grated nutmeg, black peppercorn, toasted coriander, and clove. A flash of mint is overtaken by a swath of caramel, apple, and pear drops orbiting the muscular spice kick of clove, pepper, and ground chili concentrated on the tongue. Kapow! Review: Glendalough Mizunara Finish Single Malt 13 Year

Vital Stats: 92 Proof. 13 years in Bourbon, finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak Puncheons. $86/750ml

The final whiskey pours the brightest, most brilliant, and floatie-free with a glowing straw coloration, a beautiful bounciness, and more strong legs. The aroma is a doozy here, huge booms of spicy wood and fresh-cut grass leap from the glass. Deep inhales show notes of a dank, musty basement, and even a hint of peach skin. Its a mind-bender for sure, and encourages an almost-immediate sip to see what Mizunara is all about.

The liquid immediately dries out the lips and tongue as it hits them, although astringency seems to work in this liquid. The physical sensation is followed by an evening out of the liquids smoother side across the palate, bringing along the flavors of vanilla, honeycomb, and a finish with notes of Christmas spice, Medjool date, and a big, lingering oak presence. It definitely burns and dries at various times making it a slower sipper, which is ok, as its a joy to savor and contemplate.

Upon its release, this whiskey won double gold at The World Spirits Competition in San Francisco. It really is an Irish whiskey that will make you think twice about Irish whiskey. A lovely, light and drinkable whiskey, it’s also complex with a depth of flavour beyond its years.

Aged twice in barrels from far sides of the world, the flavours are a game of two halves.

American oak Bourbon barrels bring sweet honey and smooth vanilla notes, laying down the foundations of the flavours. The Spanish oak Oloroso barrels layer on dried fruit, and nutty flavours.

To find the best Oloroso casks, we go off the beaten track to the small Andalusian town of Montilla, home of the famous PX grape. Here we can talk one on one with producers, chose the bodega, the liquid, the time seasoning, and eventually the casks. This gives us more influence on the flavours in our Double Barrel whiskey.

On the nose: Very grape-forward. Its very tart and floral, which makes me think of grape-flavored jelly aces with a bit of Marc muskiness. A quick ethanol bite comes out after. Behind these are light aromas of elderflower, honeysuckle, chocolate-covered cranberries, prunes and peppers.

In the mouth: Very similar to the nose but not as intense. The grape-flavored jelly aces are still there. But the other other fruity notes are less noticeable. I get honey, chocolate, cranberries, raisins, honeysuckle, elderflower, Juicy Fruit bubble gum and grape skin.

Glendalough is a fascinating Irish distillery that offers a range of products developed with creativity and artistic abandon. Some are fantastic and some miss the mark, but we are always eager to see what they produce next. Today we are trying a new whiskey and gin from the distillery.

Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey This single grain whiskey has an unusual mashbill that includes corn and malted barley. It was aged 3 years in ex-bourbon barrels followed by 6 months in ex-oloroso sherry barrels. The nose is surprisingly complex, offering vanilla followed by honey, fresh apple, grass, bubblegum, and mixed floral and grain notes. The palate follows suit with vanilla coming first, followed by much of the same as the nose apples, honey, raisins, cinnamon, grass, and cereal. For a young whiskey, the flavors come together well in this light-bodied whiskey, and although the finish is a bit short, its pleasant all the same. Id love to see what this would taste like with a bit more aging, but this is a surprisingly good whiskey as is and a great value. 84 proof. B+ / $35

Glendalough Double Barrel Single Grain Irish Whiskey

Irelands Glendalough Distillery follows what is a tried-and-true pattern for craft outfits in America. Since whiskey takes a while to age and hardly anyone wants to wait anywhere from a few to several capital-hungry years before building a brand, Glendalough has resorted to a mix of unaged spirits and sourced whiskeys in the meantime. On the one hand they have their barely-aged poitins and gin, and on the other they have a line of sourced whiskey.

The most recent release from that whiskey line is Glendalough Double Barrel, out as of last month. A no age statement whiskey that is reportedly between three and four years old, it is also a single grain from a corn and malt mashbill, and one that was aged in ex-bourbon barrels before receiving a six month finish in ex-sherry casks and being cut with local, Wicklow Mountain water. Then it is bottled at 42% abv.

The WhiskeyGlendalough Double Barrel presents itself in a straight forward enough way, with a clear glass bottle capped with a screw top, and adorned with their logo depicting St. Kevin of Glendalough. In the glass, the whiskey has the appearance of white wine, which is what I expect from any young spirit aged in used wood.

Glendalough Double Barrel Whiskey is a single grain whiskey aged in ex-Bourbon and then finished in Oloroso Sherry barrels. I dont know why they chose to go with Double Barrel instead of sherry finished, seems like an odd marketing choice to me for two reasons. One, in the current American market double barrel mostly refers to using a second new-charred oak barrel. Two, sherry finished is a big turn-on for a lot of whiskey drinkers, it also sounds premium.

The term double barrel isnt regulated, so either one is fully accurate, but when it comes to marketing a product, one of the two holds a lot more gravitas and garners instant interest from whiskey drinkers while the other is usually a waste of a second cask. But Im not here to judge their marketing team and their odd decisions, Im here to assess the whiskey.

Review: Glendalough Black Pitts Single Malt Seven Year

Vital Stats: 92 Proof. 7 years in Bourbon, finished in porter barrels. $48/750ml

This whiskey pours a bit lighter and clearer, although there is some suspended particulate in the liquid. Legs are less resilient as the whiskey beads up on the glass interior. Immediately the aroma is off-putting, with a strong middle note that hovers somewhere between sweat and stale beer. There is another strange smell here which is reminiscent of artificial grape flavoring. Despite these oddities, it still plays as whiskey, somehow.

Thankfully only a hint of the grape translates to the taste, but the base liquid strikes me as overall a quite average, and maybe even boring single malt leaning toward a sweeter, grassier profile. I was expecting more roastiness, chocolate quality, and maybe some burnt caramel notes from the porter barrels, but Im left searching for even the smallest hint. It tastes far better than it smells, bringing forth a true middle-of-the-road Irish Whiskey. What may be an acceptable spirit falls down in the eyes of a drinker expecting unique flavors of experimentation.

Glendalough was founded in 2011 by five friends, and is situated in County Wicklow the business takes its name from two lakes in the hills of a national park there, while the striking branding uses an image of the holy man associated with the area, Saint Kevin.

The Glendalough distillery is still being commissioned, so the double barrel variety is a single-grain whiskey sourced from another distillery, as the company’s own stock will take a few years to mature. After the original aging in bourbon barrels, the whiskey gets an additional six months in oloroso sherry casks.

The final product is deep gold in colour, and on the nose has vanilla notes, with a creamy smoothness and an almost chocolatey finish. There’s also a touch of pear drops, some nuttiness, caramel, honey, malt and dried fruit rounding it out, with a little spice, too.

That creamy element continues on the palate, with more vanilla and dried fruit, plus a little coffee and a touch of brown-sugar sweetness. This all contributes to the whiskey’s full body.

It finishes ever so slightly hot, before the smooth, decadent body rolls along, with nuttiness and some woody spice drying it out at the end.

Glendalough Single Cask Madeira Finish Review

42% ABV. USD $50 locally.

Color: Amber.

On the nose: The heat here is similar to what I got from the Burgundy single cask. Theres a creaminess that comes with an assortment of dark fruits. I get light aromas of brandied cherries, dark cherries, pavlova cake, marzipan, plums, butterscotch, and oranges.

In the mouth: Almost the same as the on the nose, but the creaminess is at the middle and the end rather than at the front. I get light tastes of brandied cherries, plums, butterscotch, toffee, nuts, dark cherries, pavlova cake, blueberry syrup and orange peels.

Glendalough Double Barrel Whiskey Tasting Notes

NOSE Woody, lemon rind, grain-sweet, some fruit and black walnuts with a touch of frosting sweetness.

The aroma is grainy and earthy with just a bit of sweetness and in a weird way reminds me of the Bog Oak.

PALATE Woody, dry grain, stale brown sugar, cocoa powder and some spice and strawberry taffy.

Drier and a touch tannic with a slight candy sweetness that heads into the finish.

FINISH Medium -> Spice, grain, cocoa powder, and wood fade to a light taffy sweetness.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL Not fully balanced, medium body and a lightly dry feel.

Glendalough and single grain whisky dont see much coverage on Malt. Today, I hit two birds with one stone.

Glendalough is an Irish distillery whose name means Valley of the Two Lakes. It was founded in 2011. Currently, they make Poitin, gin, single malt, and grain whisky. Their single grain is said to be mostly corn with a bit of barley.

This is a brand Ive known about for a few years but felt unsure about because no one talks about them. Luckily the brand just entered my home market, so the importing company hosted an online tasting with their brand ambassador, Derek King, as the guest speaker.

Like most online tastings, one has to buy a sample set to join. The expressions that were provided were their Double Barrel , Burgundy single cask finish , Madeira single cask finish and Calvados single cask finish. All of these are non-chill filtered. The colors, too, are consistent, which makes me think theres added coloring.

Knowing very little about Glendalough, I expected the line-up to consist of single malts, but, I was surprised to learn that these are all single grain whisky. In my defense, the labels of the samples didnt mention what type of whisky they were. Also, how often do you see single grain whisky as part of a brands core range, much less with a double maturation or finishing?
