Years After George Clooney Sold His Tequila Brand For A Billion Dollars People Are Calling Out Kendall Jenner For Launching Her Own Tequila Company

  • Kendall Jenner is being accused of cultural appropriation for her new tequila brand.

  • A tequila expert and professor weighed in on why people may be criticizing Jenner.

  • She notes that other celebrities with tequila brands, like George Clooney, weren’t criticized the same way.

Almost immediately after posting a revealing her new tequila brand, 818, Kendall Jenner started taking some heat.

While many friends, fans, and family members praised the model and reality star’s new business venture, which she kept a secret for nearly four years, many critics on social media say Jenner has no right to get into the tequila-making industry because she is not Mexican.

A post shared by Kendall

The critical comments range from people asking Jenner to give credit to the distillery in Jalisco where her tequila was made and to the workers involved in making the drink to accusations of cultural appropriation.

The question of whether any non-Mexican person making tequila should be considered cultural appropriation is not for us, or any one person, to decide.

Does Rande Gerber Still Run Casamigos

Diageo buys George Clooney

The former model and founder of nightlife companies Midnight Oil and Gerber Group is one of the partners behind the astronomical success of Casamigos tequila. In 2013, long before the emergence of the multiple celebrity-backed tequila companies we see today, the brand was launched by Gerber, actor George Clooney and property mogul Mike Meldman. It made headlines when it was sold in June 2017 to British liquor company Diageo for a whopping $700 million, with an additional $300 million deal for expansion over the next ten years. For even the most ambitious of personalities, these kinds of numbers would have likely meant instant retirement. But for Gerber, the deal sealed his continued participation in a project founded on his professional ethospassion.

The day after I announced I sold the company, I was in the office, says Gerber. Where else would I be? This is what I do. I love what I do.

Located on the upper deck of a small retail park near Malibu Lagoon State Beach is Casamigos headquarters, a space where Gerber and his teamwhich includes the companys original seven employeesstill work every day. Part of the deal with Diageo was that I would remain on as chairman and operate Casamigos exactly as I have from day one, he says.

George Clooneys Casamigos Sale

Casamigos grew exponentially after launching in 2013. And just four years later, alcohol giant Diageo approached the company with an offer that was hard to refuse.

According to CNBC, Diageo agreed to pay $700 million for rights to the company in June 2017, with the potential of another $300 million based on the tequilas performance over 10 years. That sale resulted in a $1 billion payday for Clooney and his associates. As a result, Clooney was the highest-paid actor of 2018, despite not appearing in a single film.

Clooney spoke about the deal with CNBC in 2017. If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion-dollar company, I dont think we would have said yes, he said honestly. This reflects Diageos belief in our company and our belief in Diageo.

But were not going anywhere, he added. Well still be very much a part of Casamigos. Starting with a shot tonight. Maybe two.

But We’re Not Going Anywhere George Clooney Says In A Statement We’ll Still Be Very Much A Part Of Casamigos

George Clooney and Rande Gerber are cashing in big on their tequila company.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Clooney confirmed that along with partner, real estate mogul Mike Meldman, the pair will sell the alcohol brand to the European beverage company Diageo for $1 billion.

“If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion dollar company, I don’t think we would have said yes,” says Clooney. “This reflects Diageo’s belief in our company and our belief in Diageo. But we’re not going anywhere. We’ll still be very much a part of Casamigos. Starting with a shot tonight. Maybe two.”

Diageo announced the news in a press release which reveals that the deal is expected to close in the second half of calendar 2017. “The transaction values Casamigos at up to $1 billion, with initial consideration set at $700 million and a further potential $300 million based on a performance linked earn-out over 10 years, reflecting the brand’s exceptional growth trajectory and upside potential,” reads the release.

Patron Vs Casamigos The Final Verdict

If you were to ask me which tequila was better, Patron or Casamigos, I would have to say that Patron is better.

The reason why I say this is because of the way that Patron is made. The Patron family has been producing tequila for over 200 years, and they have never strayed away from their original recipe.

They have stuck with the traditional methods, and they have never changed anything about their process.

Patron is the best tequila on the market. It is a top-shelf brand and has the highest alcohol content of all tequilas. It is a smooth, well-balanced tequila that is perfect for mixed drinks but also great when served neat or on the rocks.

Casamigos, however, has a much more modern touch in its production. Casamigos is a relatively new brand, which makes it difficult for it to compete against old-timers like Patron.

Both Patron and Casamigos have an exceptional reputation among tequila enthusiasts, so the decision of which is better depends on your preferences!

The Casamigos Production Process

How George Clooney Made His Tequila Brand a Billion-Dollar Business

Tequila, in general, is very labor-intensive, and thus the process deserves complete respect for the product.

The agaves cactus plant is a product of Jalisco, Mexico. They are grown in their rich clay soil and are used as a base for tequila.

When the label on a bottle says 100% agave, it means that no additional sugars were used during the fermentation process to create the alcohol.

The sweetness it provides is 100% from the agave fruit. It results in the alcohol having more body, more flavor, and a stronger agave aroma and flavor.

In the case of Casamigos, the agaves are aged for 7-9 years before harvesting and only 100% Blue Weber agaves are used.

Their agave piñas, also known as the heart of the agave, are roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours, opposed to the usual 7-hour steam.

Casamigos fermentation process is 80 hours and is ultimately their identity stamp for the unique flavor.

The special proprietary yeast used is a blend preferred by their Master Distiller. Its purpose is to assist with the consistency and flavor of the Casamigos tequila.

What Does Casamigos Blanco Taste Like

All great tequilas rely on a strong foundation of agave, but different styles of tequila carry different characters. Reposado or rested tequilas age in wood barrels for several months until accumulating a golden color and flavor notes like oak and caramel. Añejo or old tequilas mature for even longer and have an even richer, more complex depth of flavor. Blanco tequilas, on the other hand, are the most basic expression of the spirit, which makes them unique, and Casamigos Blanco serves this style well.

Casamigos Blanco is made with 100% agave and is exemplary in aroma, flavor, and texture. Upon each sip, the nose is greeted with that straightforward agave scent along with hints of bright citrus. The citrus notes carry on into its flavor along with a slight presence of mellowing vanilla. The finish is long with little to no burn taking away from the soft, sweet agave that immediately inspires another go at it. It’s truly something to behold that Casamigos Blanco is so seamlessly approachable without any support from an extensive aging process. This brand’s founders set out to create a tequila that can easily be enjoyed all on its own with nothing else but company to share it with, and this Blanco tequila accomplishes just that.

History Of George Clooneys Tequila

Many celebrities now own alcohol brands There is The Rocks Tequila, Ryan Reynolds has a gin, Post Malone has a wine, Kenny Chesney has a rum, Dan Akroyd has a vodka, even comedian Ron White has a tequila company. But Clooney was first!

George, Rande, and Mike became good friends over the years. While building their new homes and vacationing in Mexico, their families often spent time together.

With tequila being a traditional drink in Mexico, no doubt it was their preferred alcoholic beverage of choice. As a result of tequila get-togethers, they found themselves on a quest to uncover the best-tasting tequila and figure out how tequila is made.

After many enjoyable nights were spent at hotel bars and restaurants, they eventually found a tequila that could work for them. Although slightly on the sweet side, they really liked the taste.

So much so, they offered to purchase the company knowing they could alter the recipe thereafter.

Ultimately they resorted to removing their offer but still had the opportunity to meet the Master distiller of the brand.

They then requested for their own recipe to be made for personal consumption, and all were in agreement. The co-founders sampled one recipe after the other, but there was always something missing.

To get the perfect blend, they had patience, time, and money on their side. There was no intent to start a Company and with that comes no added marketing pressures.

True to form, their tequila won every time!

How Is Casamigos Made

The agave used to make Casamigos Tequila comes from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. After harvest, the agave pinas are taken to a distillery, where they are cooked in brick ovens for 72 hours.

The cooked agave pinas roast is then fermented for up to 80 hours and distilled in barrels before bottling.

They also choose to distill their product in small batches rather than large ones so that they can control each step of the process.

This leads to better quality control over the final product as well as more efficient production times for each batch produced.
