Blended Scotch whisky is typically used in the rusty nail. Choose a mid- to high-end bottle and save the cheaper bottles for other drinks. Why Is It Called A Rusty Nail
Like many cocktail stories, the true origin of the rusty nail is lost to history. There are speculations, including that it was introduced in 1937 at the British Industries Fair along with a dash of bitters. Another account credits its invention to Manhattan’s 21 Club , where the B& B is also said to have originated. It’s also unclear when and why the cocktail took its name. One common tale says that it was originally stirred with a rusty nail, while another attributes it to the drink’s color. One thing that is not up for debate is that this was a preferred drink for the Rat Pack and they helped its rise to fame.

How Strong Is The Rusty Nail
The rusty nail is typically made with two 80-proof liquors, though scotch can be stronger. That means it’s not only full of flavor but is also among the strongest cocktails you can mix up. On average, the rusty nail’s alcohol content falls around 33 percent ABV , or just slightly lower than the whisky’s bottling strength.
William Grant & Sons History
William Grant was born in humble circumstances in the Speyside settlement of Dufftown during December 1839, being employed as book-keeper and later manager of Mortlach, the towns only distillery at that time.
However, William Grant was keen to create his own distillery, and with second-hand equipment from Cardow distillery and the help of five of his sons, the family virtually built the distillery from start to finish. The final bill for constructing Glenfiddich, including all equipment and labour, came to the very modest sum of just over £700. The first spirit flowed on Christmas Day 1887.
Five years later a second distillery, named Balvenie, was built alongside Glenfiddich, and in 1898 William Grant began to blend whiskies, establishing a Glasgow branch office and blending operation in 1903.
Exports to Canada and the USA soon followed, while William Grants son-in-law Charles Gordon travelled to the Far East on a highly successful year-long sales tour, starting in 1909. By 1914 the company had more than 60 sales offices, supporting its exports to 30 countries.
In 1957 Grants introduced its now-iconic triangular bottle, designed by German refugee Hans Schleger, and with the intention of protecting and reinforcing its independence, the firm created its own grain distillery at Girvan in 1963.

William Grant & Sons Profile
William Grant & Sons is the biggest independent whisky company in Scotland, with the third-largest malt distilling capacity in the industry. It operates four malt distilleries, namely Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Kininvie and Ailsa Bay, as well as Girvan grain distillery, on the same Ayrshire site as Ailsa Bay where there are also major maturation and blending facilities. Bottling takes place at Grants Strathclyde Business Park facility near Glasgow, where office functions are located, while a London office is situated at Richmond.
Although whisky is at the heart of the firms operations, through Balvenie and Glenfiddich single malts and the Family Reserve blends, Grants has diversified significantly over the years. Within the Girvan complex is the idiosyncratic Hendricks gin distillery, and the brand was launched initially in USA during 2000.
The programme of ongoing diversification subsequently included the acquisition of Gibsons Finest Canadian rye from Diageo in 2002, construction of Icelands first distillery, which makes Reyka vodka, in 2005, and the purchase of the Reynal and Three Barrels French brandies brands the same year, followed by Sailor Jerry rum in 2008.
2010 saw William Grant & Sons purchase both the Hudson whiskey brands of New York State-based craft distiller Tuthilltown Spirits and the second-best-selling Irish whiskey brand Tullamore Dew, with the latter being the largest acquisition made by the company to date.

What’s A Substitute For Drambuie
Drambuie is a proprietary liqueur recipe of honey and spices with a scotch base, and its taste is unlike any other liqueur on the market. There’s no great substitute and, if replaced, it will no longer be a true rusty nail. The closest liqueur alternative is Glayva, though it’s softer, and Chivas Regal’s Lochan Ora, which has been discontinued. Neither of those is as easy to find as Drambuie, which is a smart bottle to have in your bar. Not only can you enjoy a rusty nail any time you please, but Drambuie can also be useful in a variety of other cocktails. Plus, it is fabulous on its own or with ginger ale, and at 80-proof, you won’t even miss the whisky.

Drink Like The Rat Pack
This favorite cocktail of the Rat Pack first appeared in 1937 at a British Industries Fair in New York. The Rusty Nail is a blend of Scotch Whisky and Drambuie . The original cocktail was called B.I.F. but soon after the fair it was forgotten, reappearing in NYC in the 1950s as the Rusty Nail and becoming the most popular cocktail around.
There are several different stories as to how the name came about. One is that it came from the rusty nails on the wooden crates of Drambuie. Another that it was a bartender using a nail as a swizzle stick. In all likelihood it has more to do with the color of the blend of Drambuie and Scotch.
The Drambuie liqueur was launched in 1910 but the idea of this blend of Scotch, herbs and honey dates back to the 1745 when the Scottish Prince Charles Edward Stuartcame back to the British Isles after an exile in Rome. Returning to his homeland to try to reclaim the British throne for his father he brought his liqueur recipe with him. His enterprise did not however work according to plan and being defeated in a battle in 1746 the prince had to flee to The Isle of Skye where the Clan MacKinnon helped him escape the British Isles for good.
The glass was designed by Finnish designer Anu Penttinen for in 2010 and is called Sukat Makkaralla meaning Socks rolled down.
