How Does Don Julio 1942 Taste

  • Nose: Strong aroma of vanilla, caramel, roasted agave and oak.
  • Palate: Good creamy body, with hints of agave, vanilla, caramel, citrus peel, black chocolate.

Don Julio 1942 starts with a blast of vanilla on the nose, followed by caramel, roasted agave and a tad of oak.

On the palate it displays a velvety creamy body, with a very smooth taste, rich in caramel notes, nicely balanced, with no burn in a slight smoky flavor that yet provides the kick of tequila and an amazing chocolate note.

This is a great dram good for drinkers of all levels and especially for those bourbon aficionados as there are tasting notes that will be familiar.

1942 makes an incredible sipper with no alcohol burn or bad bite. It goes down nicely hence I recommend drinking it neat.

If you want to chill it a bit use large ice cubes avoiding dilution or use a set of whisky stones. Do not use it as a mixer.

Expect to find it in a $150 to $180 USD price range. It doesnt come cheap but you cant expect Don Julio, perhaps the best tequila distiller in the world to celebrate the founders legacy with a subpar spirit.

It comes in a pretty box that you will preserve for eternity.

Is it worth it? Yes, I love this tequila but I most recognize that this are hard times, thus I present some alternatives for the price conscious buyer!

What Is The Difference Between Don Julio Anejo And 1942

Don Julio 1942 Anejo 750ml

Don Julio Anejo is a tequila thats been aged for two years in oak barrels. 1942 has some sweet and spicy apple, cinnamon, figs, and brown sugar flavors.

Don Julio 1942 is a tequila that is made from 100% blue agave. Don Julio Anejo is a similar tequila, but it uses anejo agave in the production process. The difference between the two is not just price there are many differences.

The Tequila Don Julio Anejo has a very gentle scent instead of caramel and cinnamon, butterscotch, honey, and vanilla dominate. Its matured in barrels that previously housed Don Julio Reposado, much like the Anejo. The Don Julio 1942 has been aged for more than two and a half years .

What makes Don Julio 1942 so unique in this regard?

The scent of the new Don Julio 1942 has a touch more vanilla and a little more caramelized baked agave. The previous formula smelled wonderful, but the new one smells much better. The taste is richer, fuller, and more balanced, with a somewhat cleaner finish. We were so taken aback by this that we had to enlist the help of others.

Is Don Julio 1942 Extra Anejo the same? Don Julio 1942 is officially an aejo since it is matured for just 2 1/2 years in old American oak barrels, but it is only 6 months short of the additional aejo criteria. In 1942, Don Julio Gonzáles founded Tequila Tres Magueyes, a tequila distillery.

People often wonder if Don Julio Reposado or Anejo is superior.

Don Julio 1942 is not only good, is the best añejo tequila in the market. 1942 is a delicious and sweet Tequila, a great alternative for those who enjoy bourbon whiskyy and want to join the tequila bandwagon.

Offering an incredible balance between the flavor of the oak in which it was matured and the delicious sweet blue agave flavor. Incredibly easy to drink and very appropriate to accompany dessert. I would have liked it to be more smoky but that is something typical of a Mezcal enthusiast like me.

View 29 cocktails with Añejo 100% agave tequila

This añejo tequila is aged up to 32 months in recharged American white oak ex bourbon barrels but is said to be at least two-and-a-half years old – just 6 months short of qualifying to be termed an extra añejo. It is distilled in pot still No.6, a small still filling just 3 barrels per distillation.

1942 commemorates the year that the eponymous late Don Julio González started making tequila and it was launched in 2002 to commemorate the 60 anniversary. It is presented in an elongated amber bottle shaped to resemble an agave leaf. The present bottle and gift box was released in 2010, the original had lighter and greener coloured glass and was slightly more squat with a black and white photograph of Don Julio himself gracing the top of an agave-shaped leaf label. The old bottle was good but the new, sleeker more elegant bottle is even more impressive.

Does Don Julio 1942 Give You A Hangover

I have good new for you: agave spirits give minimal hangovers.

While drinks like whisky or rum turn into monosaccharide sugars that our liver must process and eliminate, producing that horrible hangover agave spirits morph into a polysaccharide sugar, which as soon as it comes into contact with the mouth begins to disintegrate, making its transformation in the body much faster and with fewer side effects.

Make sure not to mix it with soda or use beer as a chaser. The mixture of sugars will make the agave magic fade giving you the hangover you want to avoid.

Please dont overdo it! Don Julio 1942 will still get you drunk if you abuse it.

How Is Don Julio 1942 Best Served How To Drink It

Neat is the way of choice for a tequila of this quality. If you like to chill it a bit use whisky stones avoiding dilution of your precious tequila.

I strongly suggest you to avoid serving it in a tequila glass also known as caballito. Those glasses are meant for shots, not for sipping and dont let you appreciate fine aromas. Use a whisky glass or a Glencairn glass if you wanna go pro-level.

Añejos dont make good mixers, reposados are cheaper and relate better with sodas.

Don Julio 1942, Tequila Añejo

Proof: 80Nose: caramel, citrus, mild vanillaTaste: caramel, vanilla, mild herbs, hint of vanillaFinish: smooth and sweetValue: so very pricey

Its the end of April, and so: time to review some tequilas!

Now, you all know that Ive stated time and again that true tequilas are 100% blue agave and are unaged. And by unaged I mean that the tequila has spent zero time in a barrel.

But as with all things, there are exceptions. I do like my Margaritas made with Silver/Blanco tequila and I do enjoy sipping Plantinum/Plata tequilas, but: Añejo tequilas are just tasty. While they do, in my opinion, try too hard to be like Bourbon , thats not necessarily a bad thing.

Lets Not Mince Words: Don Julio 1942 may be expensive, but oh man is it fantastic!

There arent too many tequilas that sit in Don Julio 1942s price point. There are several just below and a few just above, and they are all truly awesome. So, me calling 1942 fantastic is to be expected. And seriously, at its $100 price point, it *better* be fantastic.

Don Julio 1942 may be expensive, but oh man is it fantastic!

1942 has scent notes of caramel, vanilla, and citrus. Thankfully, its taste matches up.

I drifted off there. Sorry about that. Yes, Don Julio 1942 Añejo tequila is expensive painfully expensive. But oh man, it is so fabulous.

How Its Served

Don Julio 1942 is known for its creamy, smoother, richer notes with less and near to no alcohol burn, making it perfect for sipping it neat.

Meanwhile, Clase Azul Reposado has sweeter notes and richer aromas, contributing to its full flavor profile.

Its great on the rocks if you want to dilute the sweetness and enhance its flavor.

These premium tequilas are extremely good on their own but arent exactly made for shots. If youre going to consume them, it is best to savor them by sipping.
