Don Julio Tequilas History
Don Julio came to be in 1985 when his sons commemorated his 60th birthday and the thought of creating a tequila named after him was considered to be a very fitting tribute. It gained such major popularity in Guadalajara and neighboring cities that they decided to launch it as an official brand in 1987.
From then on, it has set the standard for tequilas and has been considered the worlds very first luxury tequila during a time when they were being taken lightly and no one was willing to pay more than $30 for the best quality.
Tequila Don Julio, S.A. de C.V. has its corporate facility located in the Colonia El Chichimeco district, Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico. Although it is distributed worldwide, Diageo makes it possible to be distributed in the United States through licensing from Tequila Don Julio, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable, Jalisco, Mexico, its patent holder.
The now defunct Seagram Company Ltd. had invested in Tequila Don Julio, S.A. de C.V. in 1999, and in 2003, Diageo signed a joint venture with Casa Cuervo, selling a 50% stake for $100 million. By November 2014, Diageo took full control of the Don Julio brand and paid Casa Cuervo $408 million plus the Old Bushmills Distillery.
Its A Brand Thats Won Multiple Awards For Its Delicious Bottles
and it keeps pushing the boundaries when it comes to premium quality. Before Don Julio took to the scene, tequila was generally either considered Blanco, Reposado or Añejo. The arrival of Don Julio 70 Cristalino Tequila took to the stage as the worlds first Añejo Claro tequila, while the brands Real Tequila broke the ceiling of aging the spirit and helped to create the Extra Añejo category. With its velvety smooth Blanco qualities and honeyed vanilla and toasted oak flavors, its a one-of-a-kind sipper thats among the best of the best.
Part of the reason as to why this premium tequila is so good can be attributed to its growing region. Intellectual property laws ensure that tequila can only be made in one place: Mexico. And Don Julio is produced in the Highlands of Jalisco, one of the countrys most fertile agave-growing regions.

The Story Of Don Julio
You see Don Julios short, stumpy bottles? When 17-year-old Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada started producing his own tequila, he was frustrated that he couldnt see his friends over the tall, sleek bottles that the spirit was usually served in. So, as well as pushing his own fashion statement, Don Julio defiantly bottled his tequila in a way that would suit him. Considered uncool at the time, he probably didnt anticipate the entire industry meekly following along in a matter of decades.

Tequila may have a wild and crazy reputation, but this unique spirit is created according to strict guidelines, guaranteeing authenticity and consistency. Its distilled from the fermented juice of the Weber blue agave plant, and comes only from a specified region of Mexico, centered around the western state of Jalisco.
Tequila production begins with the agave plant, cultivated in Mexicos desert regions. Early civilizations believed agave was a gift from the gods, which they used as a source for food, fibers and building materials. They would cut off the top of the plant, and the remaining stump filled with a liquid called aguamiel that would ferment into a cloudy, low-alcohol drink.
Spain lifted the ban for good in 1792, and in 1795 gave a license for the production of tequila to Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo, maker of what is now the worlds best-selling tequila, Jose Cuervo.
A tequila labeled simply gold or joven is unaged, possibly with caramel coloring or other sweeteners added.

It Has Been Filtered Through Charcoal
Ill tell you a secret: Don Julio 70 is the same tequila as Don Julio Añejo but it was filtered through activated charcoal removing the deep amber hue characteristic of Añejo tequila while removing the hard edges making it easier to sip.
This type of tequila is known as Cristalino.
What makes different Don Julio from other filtered tequilas is that it retained the precious sweet blue agave flavors as opposed to others that end up becoming dull and bland.
This is what it makes Don Julio the best in its class.
Don Julio Reposado Prices
While prepared using the signature Don Julio style, the Reposado is aged for better flavor and character. The Reposado is aged for 8 months in American oak barrels, also known in-house as the reposado barrels.
The aging process also provides a distinctive amber color. More importantly, it provides a smooth finish, a must-have trait for any legitimate barrel-aged tequila.
Don Julio Reposado is available in 750ml bottles. Depending on where you will get it, the average price for each bottle is $45-80.

Don Julio Aejo Vs Other Brands
The flavor is somehow alike since both have that touch of orange, mango, dark chocolate, toffee penny, and of course, oak. Reviews from those who drank commented that Casamigos has a mild alcohol burn during the transition from mouth to the throat, giving it slightly negative feedback. Consuming the same quantity will still differ because of the result from each brand. Casamigos are cheaper at roughly $50.99-$69.99 in a store.
Tequila Avión Añejo
One of the brands that are considered as a competition of Don Julio is Avion. Price-wise, Avion has a cheaper bottle. Don Julio claims that it is consistent with its flavor, starting from the smell down to its flavor going down to the throat. The smooth transition is also promised as there will be no sting on the alcohol you swallow from your shot glasses. At 40%ABV, Avion is cheaper at about $44.99-$51.99 range.
This is coming from the same company that made Jose Cuervo, manufacturer of quality tequila. 1800 leaves the tongue marks of toasted oak, candied pears, butterscotch and finishes it with banana bread and cocoa, which is very interesting considering this is an alcoholic beverage. The quantity of smoke in the flavor is also evident, which can be a downside that Don Julio keeps minimal. With a store tag at around $37.99-$74.26, it is cheaper than Don Julio.

Best Things To Mix With Don Julio Tequila
Complicated drinks are not required to enjoy a mixed tequila beverage. Tequila can pair well with a variety of juices, sodas, and sparkling drinks.
- Grapefruit Juice: The unique citrus grapefruit style combines with any Don Julio tequila to make a sweet-tart that can also be refreshing. It is simple to water it down or add ice.
- Limeade: Lime is an excellent pairing with tequila but for a delicious and easy mix, try Don Julio Tequila and limeade. Add a bit of effortless glamour with a lime peel twist in a fancy glass.
- Sparkling Water: Add a bit of bubbly to your tequila with sparkling water. It adds more than melted ice or a spritz of water but still lets you taste the Don Julio Tequila of your choice.
- Ginger Beer: Depending on the brew, ginger beer can be a spicy or smooth combo with any tequila in the Don Julio luxury tequila line. Ginger beer also mixes well with citrus flavors and other spices.
- Soda: An easy and familiar mix, Don Julio and soda of any kind can be a refreshing mix. Don Julio Blanco with a Ginger Ale and lime wedge can be just as delicious as Don Julio Reposado and cola.
A Bespoke Growing Process
Rather than buying land, Don Julio decided to lease it, allowing him to pick and choose exactly which plants to use on a year by year basis. His chosen agave hearts would then be taken to his distillery, La Primavera where they would be carefully cut, steamed, crushed and eventually mixed with water and yeast. Each bottles seal of authenticity details exactly which agave hearts were used while the microclimate and mineral-rich soil ensures a high standard of plants to begin with.
And the super-premium nature of Don Julio tequila boils down to more than just reputation. This is a brand whose name has never gone off the table of trending spirits and for a very good reason. Combining hand-harvested blue agave with a master distiller whose previous engineering experience features everything from explosives to perfume and liquids has resulted in a distinctive drink of the utmost quality.
This quality hasnt gone amiss: Don Julio is the largest valued brand of tequila all over the world and its counted among the eight largest produced liqueurs by volume at an international level. Its sweet aromas, traditional flavors and blue agave mouthful make every one of Don Julios tequilas a genuine treat to sample.

The Best Way To Drink Don Julio Tequila
There are so many different ways to enjoy Don Julio Tequila that it is hard not to claim the top five are straight, on the rocks, blended, mixed, and in a cocktail. The five best ways to enjoy Don Julio Tequila in a cocktail:
- Paloma Don Julio Tequila, lime juice, and grapefruit soda
- Tequila Collins Don Julio Tequila, lemon juice, agave nectar, and club soda
- A Tequini A tequila twist on a martini, use a Don Julio Blanco Tequila and high-quality vermouth for a dry cocktail.
- Brave Bull Kahlua and Don Julio Blanco Tequila.
- Reposado Old-Fashioned Use a Don Julio Tequila that has been barrel-aged, bitters, agave nectar, and bing cherries.
Don Julio Aejo Vs The Competition
- Tequila AviónAñejo
- Casamigos Añejo
- checkDon Julio Añejo
Sweet and peppery characterize the initial palate of the 1800 and mid-palate transition. The 1800 Añejo shows traces of cinnamon, candied pears, butterscotch and toasted oak, plus a finish of cocoa and banana bread. On the other hand, wild honey and butterscotch are on display when the Don Julio/DJ Añejo enters your mouth.
However, what sinks 1800 is an observed strong presence of smokiness in the taste. For some, strong traces of the roasting process may have settled in the final product, likely an oversight due to 1800 being part of the mass market tequila assembly line of Jose Cuervo. In contrast, the DJ consistently keeps the smoky taste to a minimum, or even at zero presence.
Don Julios añejo may be more expensive than the Avión añejo.
However, the Don Julio/DJ presents a strong case of value-for-money tilting brains, lips, noses, tongues, throats and opinions towards its entry level aged tequila.
One, the DJ añejo consistently displays no alcohol burn, with a nip in the Avión. Everything is bright, lightly spiced, rich and smooth, and you dont forget the agave presence in the Don Julio.
Second, the DJ has a consistently minimal tinge of American oak residue when the añejo hits your mouth. On the other hand, the Avión has an up-down presence of oak in the taste, which was a turn-off for some.
Casamigos añejo is neck-and-neck against Don Julios añejo in terms of pricing.

Chilled Is The Best Way
- From my experience the best way of drinking Don Julio is chilled. Put the bottle in the freezer and enjoy after a long day of hard work. The alcohol content wont allow the bottle to freeze so no need to worry.
- This Tequila is so remarkably smooth that you can sip it neat it doesnt have alcohol warmth.
- Another option is to drink it rocks although I suggest using large ice cubes avoiding dilution you dont want to water-down this precious dram.
- Don Julio 70 does not make a good mixer due to its price. Generally, I never spend more than $30 USD in a spirit to make a cocktail. Use a good mixer such as Espolon Blanco for your homemade cocktails.
How Don Julio Tequila Is Made
The secret behind Don Julios tequila starts with homegrown agave and a unique aging process. They use agave derived from their private plantation, which is located at the Atotonilco highlands.
The pina, which is the core of the agave plant, is hand-cut and baked over the course of days. It is then crushed and water is added to extract the so-called agave juice.
This juice is then fermented and then placed in stills for distilling. Once the distillation process is completed, the tequila is placed for either bottling or aging, depending on the variant.

Beautiful nose of bright flowers, honey, blue agave, vanilla.
On the palate, Don Julio 70 is incredibly smooth, rich in vanilla, oak and caramel and a tad of agave.
Finish remains smooth, with vanilla, oak and a bit of black pepper, with very little warmth.
This process removes hard edges from the spirit making it easier to drink. This type of Tequila is known as Cristalino, and makes a perfect choice for those who want an overly easy yet tasty dram.
How To Drink Don Julio
The only way to drink Don Julio is to savor it slowly. It might seem like muscle memory to drink tequila in shot form but for the super premium bottles, its worth experiencing the aroma and flavor notes of the bottle. Don Julio is best served neat or, at most, with a few drops of water to bring out its unique properties. Treat it the same way youd treat fine whisky or rum and take the entire process step by step.
Start by pouring the spirit into a tasting glass to let the aromas breathe. Then, nose it gently with small sips to let the individual flavors dance on your tongue.
You dont have to rule out shot glasses completely when it comes to drinking Don Julio. In Mexico, some say the traditional way to drink tequila is in a caballito a taller, slender shot glass thats served with a lime and salt. The main thing is to not rush the process, and to enjoy the spirit sip by sip to appreciate its quality.

How To Drink It
You drink Don Julio in one way to make sure you taste its full flavors, and that is slowly. We are not talking about low-quality items but an Añejo tequila 750ml that comes from premium bottles.
Pour it in your glass and smell the bursting aromas, some fruits and vanilla, and some oak, before you sip it slowly. What you want to do is to take it slow, for each swallow is a celebration.
Don Julio Anejo Vs The Competition
There are multiple anejo rums on the market, with some of them true anejos, while others may be only anejo by name. That said, some of the biggest rivals of Don Julio Anejo include the likes of 1800 Anejo and Casamigos Anejo.
Given the price range of Don Julio Anejo is $45-50, it compares favorably to most of its rivals. The 1800 Anejo is the only tequila thats significantly more expensive than Don Julio, but the Don Julio more than holds its own in quality to its contemporaries.
