Clase Azul Tequila Black Bottle

And The Demand Is Something Thats Never Really Slowed Down

Clase Azul Tequila “Gold” Limited Edition – Unboxing and Bottle Showcase

Youll never find two identical bottles of Clase Azul Tequila. Created in the mountainous Mexican town of Santa Maria Canchesda, each of the brands bottles is hand-sculpted and hand-painted by a local artist using the Mazahua peoples ancient techniques.

These incredible bottles were designed to look backward at the brands cultural heritage while celebrating its forward-thinking practices.

Its also a brand that has far more to show off about than just its liquid gold. Around 80% of its employees in Mexico are women who grew up in poverty or without education. Working with Clase Azul gave them an opportunity for food, childcare, transport, and an income.

This purpose-driven company also paves the way towards sustainable practices, ensuring its land is farmed ethically, its packaging is chosen carefully and its agronomic engineers understand best practices all around.

The Bottles Themselves Are A Work Of Art

All of Clase Azuls tequilas are housed in handmade ceramic bottles that are crafted and painted by Mexican artisans. Each bottle takes at least two weeks to make and includes intricate carvings and paintings that honor Mexicos history and culture. Each type of tequila has its own unique bottle and tells its own story. For example, the blue-green color of the Mezcal Guerrero bottle represents the jade stone, which is an ancestral symbol of eternity. Aside from being works of art, Clase Azul bottles also double as reusable decanters.

It’s The World’s Most Wanted Tequila

Every year, Wine-Searcher publishes a list of the most popular products in a given category. Between March 2021 and March 2022, the ten most wanted tequilas included three products by Clase Azul. It was their reposado, however, that topped the list altogether. Despite Jose Cuervo’s market dominance and the influx of celebrity-owned and advertised tequilas now available, Clase Azul Reposado remains at the apex of its class.

Within that same 12-month time frame, tequila searches on Wine-Searcher increased by over 250%. This comes as no surprise as the spirits and cocktail renaissance of the past couple of decades has been mostly driven by tequila. What used to be considered a cheap option used only for hasty intoxication has seen its revival from the back of the bar to being sipped and enjoyed neat.

Additionally, the price tag on these newly appreciated bottles does not seem to matter, according to Wine-Searcher. People are clearly putting their money forward to taste these premium spirits and do not seem to be doing so based on any celebrity cachet. Instead, it is the product with a dedication to quality that is leading the way. Clase Azul Reposado tops this list because of characteristics you will not find in a commercial or photo shoot. They can only be found by holding the bottle in your own hands and experiencing the fruits of its labor yourself.

The price is definitely on the higher side, but the purchase of this tequila should be looked at as an investment. This tequila is not meant to be consumed mindlessly and fleetingly. Clase Azul Reposado is meant to stamp the extra special days of your life. Whether that be on a day a life begins, when two merge together, or even when one comes to an end, this tequila is for celebration and togetherness.

Clase Azul Reposado is the king of tequila. The cultivation of ingredients and the skills of the people devoting their craft to it results in a product of unparalleled taste and presentation. A Legacy To Mexicos Creative And Cultural Heritage

Mexican founder Arturo Lomeli had two big interests in life: art and ceramics, and creating a tequila brand. Two initial attempts to create something smooth and delicious didnt take off before he went back to the figurative drawing board and started from scratch.

A tacky sombrero was quickly disregarded for branding and, after Lomeri went back to school to study luxury marketing, was replaced with a unique, hand-crafted ceramic bottle designed to be celebrated and upcycled revered the same way the spirit inside would be.

Lomeri released his first bottle of Clase Azul in 2000, after 12 months of aging. Bottles sold for around $100 before things stepped up a notch. In 2007, he sold a $1,200 bottle of dark amber Clase Azul Ultra and things began to scale from there.

While Lomeri never set out to create premium tequila sold at top-level prices, he quickly began to understand the desire and the exclusivity that came from owning one of these one-of-a-kind bottles.

That dedication to art and luxury certainly paid off: the most expensive bottle of Clase Azul sold for $30,000 as part of a miniature collection to celebrate Clase Azuls 15th anniversary.

Why Is Azul Tequila So Expensive

100% blue agave makes every bottle of Clase Azul tequila. The agave core is ground down to extract every last drop and collected to begin the fermentation process using their proprietary yeast. Every variety of tequila made by Clase Azul uses a particular type of agave to make distinctive flavors across the entire Clase Azul family.

While the tequila is aging, artists set to work individually hand-making the ceramic decanters that will eventually house the tequila. Every decanter is hand-painted and designed to reflect the culture that inspired every variety of their tequila.

This attention to detail and artisanal handling does come at a cost, however. The starting price for a bottle of Clase Azul tequila is just over $100, and the price can rise as high as $2,000 depending on rarity. Some bottles are limited editions made in small batches. For this reason, Clase Azul tequila is considered a higher-end tequila, and the price quickly increases with the rarer varieties.

The Clase Experience Goes Beyond Tequila

In 2021, Clase Azul launched a unique dining and tequila tasting experience called A Taste of Culture. Housed at Clase Azul Boutique in Los Cabos, Mexico, the tasting allows attendees to explore the history behind tequila while enjoying traditionally prepared Mexican cuisine. The exclusive event is held for eight people and lasts about two hours. Tequila enthusiasts can find information about tickets and upcoming dates for the one-of-a-kind experience at Clase Azuls website.

How To Drink Clase Azul Tequila

Clase Azul Clase Azul Ultra (750ML)

Youll spot the difference between drinking Clase Azul tequila and lesser brands before youve even taken a sip of this seriously smooth spirit.

While the tequila of your youth might have been thrown back with a squeeze of lime and a barely disguised look of mild horror, Clase Azul sits right at the other end of the spectrum. This premium spirit changes the very definition of tequila, in a bottle that should be drunk as slowly as is humanly possible.

You want to ensure your Clase Azul is served at room temperature. Its not a bottle that should be chilledeven the Plata. Serving at room temperature allows this spirit to shine, without being diluted with colder surroundings.

Its also one you dont really need ice for. Youll never experience the cliche tequila burn when drinking Clase Azul, which means neat is the way forward when enjoying it. While you could make the most of mixers when drinking tequila, youre in danger of masking the bottles unique flavors when doing so.

If youre going to mix it, aim for subtle flavors rather than bold pours. And, when serving it, choose a larger glass. A shot glass might be the traditional option but a larger glasseven a wine glassallows the spirit to breathe for maximum enjoyment.

Every Bottle Is Handcrafted

Premium spirits on the market come in a wide range of shapes with different decorations or special features on or inside the packaging. High-end tequilas are thriving, and the packaging they come in can be just as creative and unique as any other spirit. The one thing that unifies most of them, however, is they are all glass but not Clase Azul Reposado.

According to Paste Magazine, the artists who sculpt every bottle of Clase Azul Reposado come from Santa Maria Canchesda, a village that champions the art of pottery. Not only is every bottle of Clase Azul a hand-sculpted and painted piece of clay, but they are also each one of a kind because of the irregularities of the craft.

It takes 11 days to make each bottle, according to Forbes. The process includes forming a cask mold out of the soil which is then polished, glazed, and painted before baking in a 2,100 degree Fahrenheit oven. Clase Azul Reposado bottles are not slapped with a label, either another upheld tradition of making tequila. The hard work and attention to detail that goes into each bottle rightfully take center stage.

When Arturo Lomeli founded Clase Azul in 2000, reinforcing this art form was part of his agenda, according to Forbes. He said, “I knew artisans were all over Mexico and that their craft was struggling to survive in the wake of machine-made products … it made perfect sense to fuse the two together.”

Clase Azul Tequila Tasting Notes

The result is simply divine, a pleasant sipping experience from start to finish. Even in a shot glass, theres a pleasant agave nose that effectively buries the alcohol. The first impression is of sweet, ripe agave and as it rolls past your tongue, a whole array of complex tastes come out, from the dark and earthy to the bright and flowery. This is some of the most interesting and balanced tequila Ive every tried .

This is a true highland tequila, with more going on in the mouth and a much smoother finish than the more famous, high-volume brands you see on every bar shelf from the town of Tequila and its surroundings. As you would probably guess, its for sipping, not mixing. Save the more clumsy mass-market ones for your cocktails.

The taste lingers on far after youve swallowed and its a pleasant, sweet finish that almost feels like the aftermath of indulging in dessert. Clase Azul Reposado is sweet enough on the finish, in my opinion, that it could take the place of a liqueur as an after-dinner drink. But itll be an after-dinner drink with a lot more complexity that some of the syrupy things that often show up on that section of the menu. Its also darker than a lot of reposado tequilas, thanks to more time in a barrel.

This tequila is also differentiated in where its blue agave is from and how the big fruits are roasted .

History Of Clase Azul Reposado

Clase Azul review

According to Forbes, Clase Azul was founded in 2000 by Arturo Lomeli, who has since fulfilled his mission of producing high-end tequila built by authenticity. Lomeli grew up in Guadalajara, the state capital of the home of tequila, Jalisco. In 1997, at age 24, Lomeli took a shot in the liquor business through a bar venture, which he quickly realized was not for him. In search of a way forward, Lomeli returned to school and, in 1999, discovered just that.

Lomeli studied and practiced both tequila-making and ceramics before deciding to call his new company “Clase Azul,” an ode to a popular Mexican telenovela called “Azul Tequila.” In 2000, Forbes notes, the very first bottle of Clase Azul Reposado was filled and hit the market. Since then, Clase Azul Reposado has been the company’s iron horse. While other bottles are filled with different types of tequila or are released as special editions, it’s Lomeli’s reposado that set the bar and continues to raise it over twenty years on.

In 2019, Lomeli and his longtime business partner, Juan Sanchez, received an offer for Clase Azul for $1 billion, Forbes reports. They turned it down. Evidently, the brand is not for sale, and the owners value a hands-on approach .

Where Can You Buy Azul Tequila

You can find Clase Azul tequila at almost all the retailers that carry alcohol: most liquor stores, Costco, and Sams club. If youre looking for it online, you can buy it from liquor store websites like TotalWine, ReserveBar etc. Some higher-end varieties of Clase Azul may be more difficult to find in retail stores and could mean a hunt for collectors to track down.

Dessert Pairings Are Recommended With Clase Azul Reposado

A spirit can fulfill a variety of purposes, whether it be sipped before a meal to prepare your appetite, after a meal to bring it to a close, or any place in between. Tequila is typically enjoyed in bright and refreshing cocktails, but Clase Azul actually recommends that a tequila as high-quality and decadent as its reposado be accompanied by a dessert.

In addition to being paired with a rich cut of pork or creamy, aged cheese, Clase Azul suggests its reposado sit alongside a bittersweet chocolate mousse with hazelnut and orange. Because reposado tequila is aged, it carries flavor notes accumulated from the wooden container it sits in. Clase Azul Reposado is aged in American oak barrels, the same used for bourbon whiskey, which gives the reposado deep, warm flavor notes, like caramel and vanilla. These sweeter flavors are well-balanced and enhanced with bittersweet chocolate of 78% cacao, according to Lindt.

There are dessert cocktails and spirits meant for after the meal entirely. Of course, Clase Azul Reposado is delicious enough to not require any sidekicks, but a luxurious pairing of select chocolate with this premium tequila is just another reason why Clase Azul Reposado stands apart from the pack.
