Blue And White Ceramic Tequila

Luxury Tequila Is Having A Moment Right Now

Clase Azul Tequila (Clase Azul Reposado Tasting) {How Good Is Clase Azul?}

And Mexico’s Clase Azul tequila brand is capitalizing on the craze.

Clase Azul — which sells bottles ranging from $100 to $30,000 each — has been served at some highly exclusive affairs, including movie premieres, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and celebrity parties.

The label has come a long way since it launched in 1997. Mexican founder Arturo Lomeli admits his first tequila was low-cost, “terrible” and packaged with a tacky sombrero and mustache.

Lomeli decided to go back to school to get a master’s degree in luxury marketing to elevate his brand. He quickly learned about the value of crafting a higher quality product in unique packaging

Clase Azul tequilas are now sold in hand-sculpted, hand-painted ceramic decanters that are shaped like massive restaurant-style pepper grinders.

“We started thinking in terms of exclusivity, in terms of giving the best that we can to those who can really appreciate it,” he said.

Lomeli said he first became known as a high-end tequila craftsman in 2007 when he launched a $1,200 bottle of dark amber Clase Azul Ultra. It was simply intended to cause a stir on the tequila scene, rather than become an enduring product.

“We didn’t imagine that we were going to be in the business of selling super expensive bottles regularly,” he said.

Lomeli considers himself lucky that he launched his luxury spirits as Americans were getting a taste for premium tequila.

Instead, Clase Azul concentrates on export markets in the U.S. and Europe.

Enjoy The Delicious Taste Of Clase Azul Tequila

The Clase Azul Plata is a distinctive blanco tequila with a powerful sweet kick and lots of agave flavour. In addition, it has warm notes of nuts, spices, and pepper. Everything here is sweet and spicy – there’s no harsh burn, just a smooth tequila which tastes amazing neat or in a cocktail. The Clase Azul Reposado has similar flavours, but with a heavier note of oak that comes from it being barrel aged. It has hints of subtle caramel, with a vegetal note of green pepper, and a long, refined finish. To fully enjoy the Clase Azul Reposado, you should drink it neat, from a flute-style glass. This lets you appreciate the intense amber colour and the silky, rich body of the tequila.

Clase Azul Tequila In A Hand

In most cases, when you hear premium tequila described as coming in a beautiful bottle, that bottle is usually glass. There are a few that are packaged in real Mexican pottery though and the Clase Azul packages are real works of art. Made by hand on a pottery wheel, fired, and hand-painted with fine glazes, these are gifts that will create a lasting impression on the lucky recipient. This is not a tequila bottle you want to hide in a closed bar cabinet. Its something to put out on display like a beautiful vase.

Probably for that reason, this is the kind of tequila Ive received the most as some kind of welcome gift at a high-end luxury hotel or villa rental. The first time was at Rosewood Las Ventanas in Los Cabos, recently when checking into a grand vacation rental from Agave Villas. It makes a great impression at first sight, but it also impresses when you go to sip it after a pour.

You wont normally buy an expensive bottle of liquor just for nice packaging, which is why Clase Azul is so satisfying. This is not one of those tequilas where the bottle and marketing hype justify the price more than whats inside. This is a premium spirit that would really stand out in a blind taste test and its approachable enough that you dont have to be a connoisseur to enjoy sipping it straight.

Clase Azul Tequila Is Made With Passion And Craftsmanship

CLASE Azul Reposado Tequila Empty Bottle Pottery Hand Painted 750ml ...

In the first step of tequila production, organic agave plants from Jalisco, Mexico are grown to maturity for at least nine years before they are harvested. Then the agave is slow cooked for 72 hours in traditional brick ovens to release its sweet juices. The next stage is fermentation which is done using a proprietary yeast strain which enhances the tequila flavours.

Once the fermentation and resting of the tequila is complete, the Clase Azul is bottled. The tequila is bottled by hand, into beautiful artisanal bottles which are hand sculpted and individually painted, so no two bottles are exactly alike. The materials used are of the highest quality, including the ceramics, the non-toxic paint, and the hand-made brushes. Each bottle takes a mammoth two weeks to complete, so you can see that the process is undertaken with painstaking care. Finally, the bottles are capped with a beautiful pewter stopper to complete the look.

Clase Azul Tequila Tasting Notes

The result is simply divine, a pleasant sipping experience from start to finish. Even in a shot glass, theres a pleasant agave nose that effectively buries the alcohol. The first impression is of sweet, ripe agave and as it rolls past your tongue, a whole array of complex tastes come out, from the dark and earthy to the bright and flowery. This is some of the most interesting and balanced tequila Ive every tried .

This is a true highland tequila, with more going on in the mouth and a much smoother finish than the more famous, high-volume brands you see on every bar shelf from the town of Tequila and its surroundings. As you would probably guess, its for sipping, not mixing. Save the more clumsy mass-market ones for your cocktails.

The taste lingers on far after youve swallowed and its a pleasant, sweet finish that almost feels like the aftermath of indulging in dessert. Clase Azul Reposado is sweet enough on the finish, in my opinion, that it could take the place of a liqueur as an after-dinner drink. But itll be an after-dinner drink with a lot more complexity that some of the syrupy things that often show up on that section of the menu. Its also darker than a lot of reposado tequilas, thanks to more time in a barrel.

This tequila is also differentiated in where its blue agave is from and how the big fruits are roasted .

Clase Azul In The Painted Porcelain Decanter

Back to the reposado decanters, because theyre almost as important as whats inside. In the town of Santa Maria Canchesda, the workshop of pottery makers and painters has grown to more than 350 artisans. They craft each bottle by hand, so none of them are exactly alike. The company says that each bottle takes two weeks to complete. Two weeks!

Now that Clase Azul price of around $150 in the USA, $90 in Mexico seems like a bargain. You could easily pay that much for a piece of quality talavera pottery in Puebla, but in this deal youre getting reposado tequila inside thats way above some higher-priced brands as well.

The hand-painted pottery is topped by a silver-plated dome and cork, crowning the decanter with a gleam. If youre looking for a special holiday gift for an important business client or tequila lover, you cant go wrong with this one. If you cant tell, Clase Azul tequila is one of my clear favorites.

You can find this brand in good duty-free stores at airports, so its an easy one to pick up on the way home, but youll probably pay less if you pick it up in a Mexican liquor store or supermarket. Itll probably be in a locked section and not out on the regular shelf though, so ask if you dont see it. You can also order it from many online spirits sellers in the USA and elsewhere.

Tequila may have a wild and crazy reputation, but this unique spirit is created according to strict guidelines, guaranteeing authenticity and consistency. Its distilled from the fermented juice of the Weber blue agave plant, and comes only from a specified region of Mexico, centered around the western state of Jalisco.

Tequila production begins with the agave plant, cultivated in Mexicos desert regions. Early civilizations believed agave was a gift from the gods, which they used as a source for food, fibers and building materials. They would cut off the top of the plant, and the remaining stump filled with a liquid called aguamiel that would ferment into a cloudy, low-alcohol drink.

The Spanish introduced distillation to Mexico in the 1500s. The technique, used on aquamiel, produced the spirit they dubbed vino mezcal de Tequila. Mezcal was soon being made across Mexico, though the colonys rulers in Spain intermittently banned production of the spirit when they wanted to encourage imports from Spain and hiked taxes on it when money was needed for public projects.

Spain lifted the ban for good in 1792, and in 1795 gave a license for the production of tequila to Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo, maker of what is now the worlds best-selling tequila, Jose Cuervo.

Over the past few years luxury spirits brand Clase Azul has dramatically risen in popularity. Their reposado tequilahoused in a blue and white ceramic bottle with a bell capin particular has become a cult favorite, and today theyve taken that iconic decanter to the next level. This morning the company has unveiled a brand new, limited-edition tequila made for collectors and enthusiasts. Dubbed Master Artisans, its an annual series where Clase Azul will partner with a different Mexican artisan every year on a unique bottle that celebrates Mexican culture and the arts.

On the first Master Artisans bottle by Santos youll find long-plumed pheasants, which symbolize light and prosperity in many cultures, and flowers that are iconographic symbols of Tonalá tradition. The blue represents the air, sky, and water, while the two orange flowers embody sun and fire, paying tribute to elements that are necessary for creating ceramics. Each decanter was meticulously hand painted, a process that took 10 to 12 hours for each piece.

Clase Azul Reposado Is Sold In A Handmade Porcelain Bottle In The Mexican Delft Style Says Karen Von Hahn

Karen von Hahntimer

A friend of our sons brought us this remarkable bottle on New Years Eve, at which point its contents were promptly drained by our guests a small, but enthusiastic band of revellers that turned out to include a number of tequila buffs.

This friend, a childhood pal of our sons, had only just arrived that very night from Mexico and had managed to sprint from the runway at Pearson to our place before the ball dropped. It was quite the entrance: strange bottle hoisted high in one hand like a blue-and-white Oscar statuette, Ben arrived to cheers and applause from all assembled. Some of us thrilled that Ben had made it the tequila buffs just really happy to see a bottle of Clase Azul Reposado., which is called Clase Azul Tequila at the LCBO.

According to the notes on the liquor, which I have no choice but to rely on, since, as hostess, I was too busy running around picking up dirty plates and finding more glasses to enjoy even a single drop of before the bottle was immediately sucked dry, Clase Azul is warm and fruity, medium amber in colour, and exhibits intense aromas of spice, earthy agave and caramel, with a pleasantly salty, long finish.
