Gold Tequila For Margaritas
Gold tequila is colloquially referred to as dark tequila or aged tequila. This version is made by distilling the juice from a blue agave plant and turning it into liquor. Most dark tequila brands that are not aged are not 100% pure agave. They usually mix that only contain around 51% agave tequila.
Dark tequila can get its color from two different places: wood barrels or caramel additives. For instance, Reposado in 200-liter white oak barrels for at least 2 months, while Añejo tequila is aged for 12 months. Reposado and Añejo are the only tequilas that have to be aged according to regulations.
Aside from wood barrels, the dark color can also come from caramel coloring and sugar that is added to the batch before fermentation. Most of the time, these additives are for the purpose of mimicking the gold hue of high quality aged tequilas. However, they are also attributed to giving the tequila a smoother taste, which is why they are the preferred choice for taking shots.

When shopping for tequila, look for these words on the bottle. It is easier than ever to find them because almost every tequila brand has realized that this is what drinkers really want.
Blue Weber is known as the most elegant expression of tequila. While tequila falls under the mezcal category, several distillers around the town of Tequila began distilling a superior form of mezcal. They used the whole heart of blue agave, which is indigenous to the region, describes Brian Olson, the founder and owner of Café Intermezzo.

Patron is a brand that I believe is misunderstood, says Darnell Holguin, beverage director of New York’s Las Lap. helped bring attention to the category as a whole by offering a premium spirit during a time when the U.S. was still trying to understand tequila. The Roca lineup is pricey, but noteworthy in that a giant stone wheel called a tahona is used to press the agave after cookinga traditional method that many believe extracts more flavor. Holguin describes the flavor as balanced with an herbaceous quality and a spicy, warm finish.

The Best Cheap Tequila For Margaritas
The margarita is a fun, easy drink thats popular in bars and at parties. It features lime juice and sugar, meaning its pretty sweet right from the get-go. This means that you dont have to be too picky with your choice of alcohol because bad flavors are easily hidden. It also means you can choose from a wide range of flavors sweeten even more with a sweet tequila or balance it out with a more savory, spicy spirit.
Either way, you can go cheap. This is good news for bars as well as frequent party hosts. The best cheap tequila for margaritas is simply one that complements the drink to your taste. Here, weve outlined a selection of super-cheap tequilas that features a flavor palate well-suited to a margarita, whether you want it extra sweet or well-balanced. Many of them work well in other tequila cocktails too.
Just as fun as the margarita itself is the collection of stories behind it. While not a centuries-old cocktail, its history is perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of all. Many people claim to have invented the classic cocktail.
One of the most popular theorized creators is Carlos Herrera who claims to have created the cocktail in 1947 when he served a picky customer at his bar. She said she was allergic to everything except tequila. Lime was a common tequila shot chaser so he used that, added Cointreau, put some salt on the rim, and gave it to her. He says he gave it the name margarita because thats the closest Spanish name to her name which was Marjorie.
What Color Tequila Is Best For Margaritas
If you want to make a tequila cocktail, you can use either a silver or a blanco. The tequila in this case was only aged for two months in oak. It has a strong flavor that complements the flavor of the coffee well. In fact, because the oak is more mature, gold tequilas are not as suitable for margaritas.

Best Tequila For Margaritas
You can mix your favorite tequila into these frozen margs. There are a few types of tequila that I detail in my Tequila 101 crash course.
- I like to use blanco, or silver tequila for my frozen margs. Clear and colorless, it works really well in any margarita recipe. Gold tequila has added caramel color to make it seem aged, so I dont usually recommend it, but it will taste just fine if you use it.
- Reposado is another type of tequila is aged in oak barrels between two months and one year and gets its natural caramel coloring from the oak. Its flavor is more complex, but you can either mix with it or sip it straight. Its more expensive than gold or silver tequila but is still affordable.
- Using an infused tequila, like this spicy jalapeño tequila, is an easy way to experiment with flavor.
If you see añejo or extra añejo on the label, that signifies its a premium tequila that was aged for more than a year . Like a fine cognac, these are expensive and meant to be sipped straight, so I wouldnt recommend them for margaritas.
Mezcal is one more choice you can try. It has a smokier flavor than tequila technically, tequila is a type of mezcal that tastes cleaner than other types of mezcal.
My favorite tequila brands right now are Sauza, El Jimador and Lunazul, but there are tons more out there. For top-shelf margaritas, try Don Julio, Patron or Milagro.
Best Reposado: La Gritona
ABV: 40%Price: $35 to $40
La Gritona Reposado Tequila is relatively new but already one of the most sought-after Tequila brands when it comes to reposados. It was one of the few bottles on our list mentioned by almost all experts – They must be doing something right.
Kaitlyn Stewart, global Bartending Champion & Beverage Consultant, is one of the experts recommending La Gritona Tequila. For her, it’s definitely a bottle of Tequila that is worth its price:
“La Gritona: this is a fantastic Reposado Tequila… It’s damn delicious, and it’s worth every penny.”
La Gritona does an excellent job of capturing the authentic flavors of agave. The spirit is slightly sweet, super smooth, and brings in mellow herbaceous flavors alongside cooked agave notes.
Why we like it: La Gritona ticks all the boxes and is by far our favorite Reposado Tequila for making a Margarita. Another plus is the comparably low price point.

An easy way to remember how to mix a classic margarita is to memorize the ratio 3-2-1: three parts tequila, two parts good triple sec , and one part lime juice.
How much tequila do you put in a margarita mix?
To mix up into a classic margarita I do about 3 ounces of margarita mix, 2 ounces of silver tequila, and 1 ounce triple sec. Shake it up with ice and serve serve in a salt rimmed glass with a wedge of fresh lime. Voila! The recipe makes 8 cups.
How much tequila do you add to Jose Cuervo margarita Mix? Add 1 oz of tequila to a cocktail shaker followed by 3 oz of Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix, and a cup of ice.
What is the mix ratio for a margarita?
Whether youre making a single margarita or a big batch for a National Margarita Day fiesta, youll have a perfect pour every time if you stick to the ratio of two parts tequila, one part lime juice and one part triple sec or orange liqueur. Now that youve got that down, its time to shake things up.
How To Salt A Rim For Margaritas
To put the cherry on top of this frozen margarita recipe, we love salting the rim of the glass before pouring in your frozen margarita concoction. Heres what you need:
- coarse sea salt
All you need to do is moisten the rims of the margarita glasses you want to use with water. We do this by pouring water onto a small plate and then dipping the rim of the glass into the water. From there, dip the rim onto a small plate of coarse sea salt. The water will allow the sea salt to stick to the glass.

Types Of Tequila: Blanco Reposado And Anejo
There are three types of tequila with names that indicate how much they have been aged. Each one has a different flavor profile. The best tequila for margaritas is blanco or reposado. Heres an outline of the types:
- Tequila blanco is not aged. The flavor is agave forward, with notes of pepper and citrus and a spicy finish.
- Tequila reposado is aged 2 to 12 months in oak barrels . It has a smooth flavor and notes of oak, vanilla, and caramel.
- Tequila añejo is aged 1 to 4 years in oak barrels . It tastes richer, with notes of vanilla and cinnamon. Try sipping tequila añejo straight up, and save blanco and reposado for mixing in margaritas.

Silver Or Gold: Which Tequila Is Right For You
Gold tequila is the standard pick for margaritas: it’s made from agave and aged in barrels, resulting in a more complex taste. If you like your tequila to go down smoother, whether for shots or margaritas, go with gold tequila. It’s a bit sweeter compared to silver tequila, too. But be cautious: look for gold tequila that’s labeled as 100% agave tequila, because if it doesn’t say that, chances are caramel and sugar have been added to it. Silver tequila, on the other hand, is not aged at all, but is still made from agave. This might be the best choice for you if you’re planning on making other drinks with tequila besides margaritas — like tequila and sodas. It’s also more affordable and not really meant to sip straight — so if you’re making bulk drinks, this could be the best pick for you. Here’s our current favorites but please note — we went with tequila bottles that are all in the standard size of 750mL, and prices might slightly vary depending on where they’re delivered:
