Highland Park Cask Strength
These drop every fall and are part of a new line from the Orkney Islands distillery. The juice is a blend of single malts that are aged exclusively in old American oak that held sherry. The barrels are married and bottled as is to assure youre getting all the nuance and flavor of their malts meeting that oak.
Theres a light sense of wildflowers on the nose with a rich vanilla husk that leads towards a touch of peat. The taste is surprisingly silken with rich and buttery toffee next to honeysuckle, eggnog spices and creaminess, and a small dose of orange zest as a counterpoint. The end holds onto the creaminess and spices as the peat just edges in with a whisper of resinous pine smoke.
While this does have a bit of a kick, its also very subtle. That spice, florals, and peat all sing together on the palate while the vanilla and orange add a nice counterbalance. Again, pour this over some rocks or add a little water to really let it open up in the glass.
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie

Its a fantastic gateway into Islay whiskygreat neat or on the rocks, even affordable enough to mix with at home or behind the bar. Its coastal on the nose and honey on the palette, with a soft bounce of smoke to finish. I keep this around always.Jordan Joseph, bar manager at Raleigh, N.C.’s Centro and Gallo Pelón
Glenmorangie The Cadboll Estate
In the year 1730, there was a distillery near the Tarlogie Spring in Ross-shire, Scotland. In 1843, William Matheson converted this brewer into Glenmorangie distillery, which became quite famous all over the World for making single malt scotch.
In Cadboll Estate, the water used for distillation or fermentation sources is from Tarlogie Spring. There is a team of 16 people in this distillery that helps in making this particular Scotch that uses the tallest still in Scotland during the distillation process, which creates a pure light scotch. The Cadboll Estate ages in a white oak barrel that produces aromas of biscuit, rose, jasmine, and chocolate flavor.

Is Scotch Still Relevant
Single malt distilleries are opening throughout America and both bourbon and rye continue to climb in popularity. While there is certainly increased competition for shelf space, its important to remember that more Scotch whisky is sold around the world than all the non-Scotch put together, says spirits writer Charles MacLean.
Scotch is not under threat,’ MacLean says. Whisky makers go to great lengths to create the flavors they want. It is not a haphazard process, it is driven by high craft, often passion and, increasingly, science. One style of whisky is not better than another they are different by design. I welcome the increase in malt whisky distilling around the world since it offers consumers broader choice, expands interest in the category and encourages exploration. Malt whisky drinkers, like wine drinkers, are pluralists: they dont stick to one brand they would be crazy to, with such a range of flavors to choose from.
Flavor-Driven Labelling vs Age Statements
Recently, there have been certain changes to the marketing of Scotch. In some cases flavor-driven labelling has taken the place of age statements. What other changes have you observed in how Scotch is produced and sold, and how do you feel about it?

Is Scotch Whiskey The Best Whiskey
If the question was instead is whiskey the best alcoholic beverage Id unequivocally suggest that yes it is! However, as we know, while all Scotch is whiskey, not all whiskey is Scotch.
So, that begs the question, is Scotch the best whiskey? As discussed above, its impossible to place a conclusive answer on such a biased and opinionated question. While some would agree that it is, others prefer Irish whiskey or bourbon instead.
With that said, there are some quantifications that can be shared that may put into perspective just how popular Scotch is in the world
Below are some fun but telling statistics about Scotch whiskey:
- The most popular scotch globally alone sells nearly 20 million bottles annually
- Annual US Scotch consumption amounts to 9.17 million 9 liter cases
- Scotch whiskey exports are valued at $4.29 billion
- There are a total of 134 operational Scotch distilleries
- Scotch distilleries boast 2.2 million visits annually by tourists interested in the Scotch making process
While these certainly arent all of the daunting statistics surrounding Scotch and its popularity, those listed provide a fairly good idea of its reach globally.

Choosing An Inexpensive Scotch
A single malt scotch starts off at around $50, and thats your bargain basement brand, so getting one that is palate pleasing in the narrow strike zone between $50 and $100 is a challenge unto itself. It also necessitates that you do background research on how the scotch is made, ensuring that the malting, mashing, and fermentation are all handled with care at every step.
Thankfully, much of this work is done for you, since to bear the name scotch alone means that the spirit meets with rigorous standards, not the least of which is that most of its creation and distilling take place in Scotland, where pretenders are summarily rooted out and destroyed by the wily and vicious highlanders.
When choosing a cheap scotch, go with a single-malt, since theres fewer sins to be committed there, and therefore harder to go wrong. Theres nothing improper about blends per se, theyre just broader in range and therefore cheaper, which can lead many astray who are trying to find a at a reasonable price.
Theres no hard and fast rule for choosing a cost-effective scotch, but asking someone who knows their business is always helpful. Find a liquor store with a large scotch section and query the clerks for a recommendation. Its part of their job and odds are good that at least one of the staff has a scotch whisky habit. Likewise, seek out bartenders and let them know where you are in your scotch journey, how much you know, what brands or flavors you enjoy, and ask them to help guide you.

This is another great sherry-casked whisky. This is a tad subtler than the bottle above but carries a very similar flavor profile, hence theyre right next to each other on this list, and both are kind of the middle of the road taste-wise.

The Glenrothes Whisky Makers Cut
The bulbous bottle from The Glenrothes is all about the sherry. The expression spends an undisclosed amount of years in first-fill sherry casks. When those barrels are just right, the whisky is then batched and vatted before being proofed down only slightly.
The nose bursts forth with butterscotch. Once that fades, hints of worn leather, orange peels, and nutmeg mix underneath that butterscotch nose. The palate is nutmeg-forward with a spicy orange zest kissed with dark chocolate and vanilla. The end feels a bit like eggnog laced with orange zest and vanilla with a spicy warmth.
This is a nice example of a bold sherry cask on a Speyside whisky. Those layers of orange zest and dark chocolate run deep with a decent sweetness from top to bottom. That said, I tend to use this for on the rocks or highballs with a dash of Angostura bitters .
