Bacardi Limited Edition Heritage Pack
A limited-edition throwback to how Bacardi looked and tasted back in 1909, when it was still made in Cuba and the Daiquiri was first making inroads in the States. Bottled at the original strength of 44.5 percent ABV, it uses aged distillates from the brands oldest operating distillery in Mexico . The result is recognizably Bacardi, but thanks to the higher proof, the vanilla, cantaloupe and lemon peel notes are amplified, while the harshness that can turn people off the flagship Ron Superior is toned down. Its a reminder of why Bacardi became so popular in the first place. Its superb in a Daiquiriand, of course, the Bacardi Cocktail , which was so popular in the 1930s that Bacardi went to court to ensure drinks using the name could only be made with its product.

That bottle can be hard to find, but check out this 2007 vintage that is a blend of column and pot-distilled spirit. The 30 Best Rum Brands
Despite its eternal status as the next big thing in drinks, rum sales still lag behind multiple other spirits in the U.S., including whiskey, vodka, tequila, and Cognac. Still, there are signs that perceptions of rum are definitively shifting.
Of the almost $2.5 billion U.S. drinkers spent on rum last year, $229 million went toward super-premium bottles, the most expensive price segment. Though still a fraction of total sales, this figure is more than 10 times greater than the amount spent on top-shelf rum 15 years ago proving that folks arent only reaching for rum to mix Mojitos and Piña Coladas.
Impressive though that growth is, numbers and spreadsheets do little to capture the depth of the category. With bottles produced in multiple continents from two starkly different base ingredients molasses and fresh cane juice the main consideration when buying rum is not how much to spend but how youre looking to enjoy the spirit. The categorys vast range of styles and ever-improving quality ensure that, whether its cocktail hour or time for a nightcap, theres a bottle for every occasion and price point.
This list captures every aspect of that impressive landscape, from single varietal agricole to transcontinentally aged and blended bottlings. Here are 30 of the best rums to buy right now.

Brands Report 202: Rum
The usual crowd have populated this years bestselling rum list. In fact, nine of the 10 brands remain a constant, with the first seven in the ranking identical to the previous year.
At the very top is Bacardí, whose dominance reigns supreme with almost a quarter of our polled bars declaring it their house pour. Its popularity is largely driven by the ongoing success of its Carta Blanca expression and premium aged rums, which benefit from Bacardís significant distribution power and the ongoing success of its Bacardí Legacy programme.
Bacardís traditional rival, Havana Club, narrowly fended off Plantation to retain its number two ranking, with just one bars house pour separating the two brands. Plantation, which is due to undergo a rebrand by owner Maison Ferrand, was the number one rum in 13% of the best bars in the business and remains one of the industrys most popular brands.
Its also interesting to see Wray & Nephew sneak on to the top trending list as the Jamaican cult classic has always been synonymous with tiki bars, yet evidence would suggest the overproof rum is gaining attention on high-end backbars around the world.
Holmes Cay Single Cask Fiji 2004
Based in New York, Holmes Cays mission is to seek out the best rums in the world and bottle them, cask by cask, completely unadulterated. Its a noble effort, and it started paying dividends immediately with their first release in 2019, sourced from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados. For a follow-up, they went to the South Pacific distillery in Fijithe only active distillery on the island. Fiji has long been below the radar of most rum aficionados, in part because most of the best ones are one-offs from independent bottlers like Holmes Cay. But Fijian rum is rapidly gaining attention, and this bottling is proof of just how good it is. Aged in American oak for 12 years in Fiji and four years in the UK, its bottled at a hefty cask strength of 58 percent ABV. A gently creamy vanilla nose gives way on the palate to bright fruit, oak and cinnamon spice, with just a hint of the smoke and burnt rubber that characterizes Fijian rum. The long, dry, lingering finish begs a repeat sip, and a glass of this rum begs a longer look into what the island has to offer.

Best White: Ten To One Caribbean White Rum
Region: Dominican Republic, Jamaica | ABV: 45% | Tasting Notes: Lemon, Grass, Coconut
Ten to One is a relatively new Black-owned brand that has a white rum worthy of sipping in its lineup. The rum is a blend that comes from the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and has no sugar, color, or flavor added to the spirit. While this rum would certainly work in a cocktail like a classic daiquiri, its flavorful and complex enough to enjoy on its own, not something that can be said about every white rum.
Region: Puerto Rico | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Vanilla, Cherry, Chocolate
Facundo Paraiso is an ultra-premium expression from Bacardi, one of the best-known names in rum worldwide. It uses rums aged up to 23 years, says Brendan Bartley, head bartender for Bathtub Gin Speakeasy Bar. Once blended, its finished in ex-cognac barrels. The French oak gives the rum a softer oak finish, letting the beautiful sophisticated flavors come through. The nose gives you vanilla, biscuit, cherry, and milk chocolate qualities, and the palate gives more richness of nuttiness, stewed fruits, salted caramel qualities.
What Is A Premium Rum
Some of the biggest names in rum such as Ron Zacapa, Diplomatico and Mount Gay have a range of premium rums. … In general, the darker rums are usually classified as premium. Rule: they should have no added sugar at all, but 100% sugar cane. Premium luxury xo aged anejo rums are best served room temperature.

Best Gateway Rum: Diplomtico Mantuano
Distiller: St. Lucia DistillersCountry of Origin: St. Lucia
Spiced rums get a bad rap because the category was long defined by overly sweet frat party juice, rife with artificial colors and other additives. Done right, a good spiced rum goes hard. This column and pot still combo spends five years on American oak before being dosed with an all-natural mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, coconut, allspice, lemon and orange. After blending, it goes back into the barrel for six months to seal in all those flavors. Herby, refined and intoxicatingly festive, its a dessert in a glass.
Is There A Temperature To Ideally Sip Rum At And Can You Drink It With Ice
If you are enjoying a sipping rum neat, its best to drink it at room temperature, as a cold pour can inhibit some of the notes on the nose and palate. But go ahead and add a large ice cube if you choose. This will lower the proof a bit, but the palate will slowly open up as you sip and the water combines with the spirit.

Market Row Botanical Rum
Not many rums can boast having Nigerian hibiscus, Kenyan black tea and rose petals from Pakistan but when you have Brixton’s Market Row on your doorstep, the pick of botanicals is always going to be impressive. This rum went down a little too well in our taste tests, so much that we have to order another bottle. There’s some brilliant vanilla notes and a heady hit of spice at the end. Lovely stuff.

Black Tot Last Consignment
Its not just a great rum, its a piece of historyand it cant be replicated. From the 18th century until 1970, British Royal Navy sailors were given a daily ration, or tot, of rum blended and aged specifically for the purpose. The blend was generally sourced from various British rum-making colonies, most notably the Port Mourant distillery in Guyana, though the blend changed frequently based on what was available. July 31, 1970, also known as Black Tot Day, marked the end of the daily rum ration. But plenty of ceramic flagons containing the historic liquid survived. Some are used to this day at British royal functions. Some others found their way into the hands of Sukhinder Singh, founder of the Whisky Exchange, who began bottling and selling authentic Royal Navy rum in 2010. The blend, bottled at 54.5 percent ABV , consists of roughly 60 percent Demerara rum 30 percent Trinidadian rum and 10 percent from various other sources, according to rum historian Matt Pietrek. Its not subtle or particularly refined, but it is delicious, with powerful dark chocolate, molasses, caramel and hints of tobacco along with the meatiness thats the hallmark of Guyanese rum. Its almost worth joining the navy to get some of this every day.
Best Rum Aged More Than 20 Years: Appleton Estate 21
Courtesy of Reserve Bar
Region: Jamaica | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Cocoa, Banana, Pineapple
This bottle is a bit of a splurge, but its well worth the expense. Aged for a minimum of 21 years, this Jamaican rum is not overly tannic or bitter. This is one of my favorite rums in the market, said Gonzalez. It has a big body with tons of stewed fruits and rich molasses.
This rum does a great job at creating a complex flavor that walks the line between an aged rum and a younger dark rum. No sugar is added to the spirit, and none is needed, as master blender Joy Spence carefully selects the liquid that fits the distinctive flavor profile of Appleton Estate.
