Glenfiddich 12 Year Old

Top 10 Skrewball Cocktails Best Skrewball Drinks Easy Peanut Butter Whiskey Cocktail Whisky Drink

Glenfiddich 12 is one of the most popular entry-level single malt whiskies in the world. While it may lack the nuanced depth that some of the older Glenfiddich bottlings are known for, its not meant to be overly contemplative. Glenfiddich 12 Year is all about approachability, and that means its enjoyable to sip on its own, but it can also shine in a cocktail.

I love mixing with Glenfiddich 12 Year because it has the right body for stirred drinks, says Star, ideal for a cocktail like the Bobby Burns. Aged for a minimum of 12 years in both American and European oak, Glenfiddich 12 Year expresses notes of pear, caramel apple, malt, citrus and white flowers, with a subtly oily mouthfeel that adds a nice weight to the whisky. As far as single malts for mixing go, there are few brands that top this industry stalwart.

A Little Twist: Muddled Ginger + Honey Syrup

The typical Penicillin cocktail uses a honey ginger syrup to sweeten the drink . This is a special honey syrup thats infused with ginger. Because we already had honey syrup on hand, heres what we did to simplify this cocktail:

  • Honey syrup is an ingredient in other famous cocktails, like the Gold Rush, Brown Derby and Bees Knees.
  • This cocktail uses honey syrup and muddled ginger, instead of making a special honey ginger syrup. This way, you can use the batch of honey syrup to make other cocktails!

Naked Malt Blended Malt Scotch

Naked Malt doesnt disclose the exact sources of the single malt whiskies in its blend. But speculation among whisky enthusiasts suggests that the blend is composed of whiskies from The Glenturret, Highland Park and Macallanthree of the most prestigious whisky brands in the industry, all owned by the same parent company as Naked Malt.

The Naked Malt is matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks for a minimum of six months, delivering a robust flavor profile that can fortify a range of cocktails. The flavor is rich and fruity thanks to the sherry finish, and its a perfect fit for a classic Scotch & Soda or a more sophisticated Rob Roy, says Dzurus.

Hajiyianni, who uses Naked Malt in a twist on the Whiskey Sour, also notes the character that sherry imparts. It has an amazing dried fruit flavor due to being finished in first-fill oloroso casks, he says. With deeper notes of sultanas , toffee and caramel, and brighter notes of red fruit and spice, Naked Malt has a depth that cant be said about many other whiskies at its price point, making it perfect for the home bar.

Frozen Blood And Sand

Scotch is probably the last spirit you associate with blender drink, but this refreshing twist on the old-school Blood and Sand might just change that. The cocktail is traditionally made with orange juice, Cherry Heering, and sweet vermouth, but because blending a drink with ice dilutes the ingredients, we replace the Cherry Heering with rich Luxardo cherry syrup and reinforce the orange juice with Grand Marnier.

Best Drinks To Mix With Scotch Ranked

There’s whiskey, and then there’s Scotch whisky. Of the different types of whiskey, Scotch is likely the original iteration of it, as the name whisky is derived from an old Scottish Highlands Gaelic phrase meaning “water of life.” Today, Scotch is distilled and aged in a similar process as most other whiskeys which all use a variety of grains for the base with the differentiator being that it was initially produced with malted barley. It’s this ingredient that makes Scotch unique in the wide spectrum of whiskeys.

While Scotch develops earthy and vanilla flavor notes just like any spirit aged in oak barrels, it is generally considered to have a smokier taste than other whiskeys. That’s because when the base grain of barley is malted under a fire in Scotland, it’s the smoke of burning peat that ultimately adds that flavor to the final product. According to Whisky Magazine, peat which is essentially rotting vegetation that develops over marshlands is characteristic of Scotland because trees and coal resources were scarce, and peat was used as a fuel source for fire instead.

With Scotch’s distinct flavor profile including varying degrees of peatiness across all Scotches, of course you may want to complement that taste with another liquid before it hits your palate. We’ve ranked some of the best drinks to do just that.

While the iconic Blue Label has long served as a status symbol among whisky drinkers and casual consumers alike, Johnnie Walker Black Label has been the blended Scotch of the people. Today, its a clear favorite among bartenders who count on its reliability in flavor and general accessibility.

In sum, he says: Great bang for your buck!

Scotch Cocktail Recipes To Show How Well The Spirit Works In Mixed Drinks

Scotch isn’t the most common spirit for cocktailswith a mix of peaty, smoky, and malty flavors, it can be tricky to pair with other ingredients. Add to that the high price tag of a good single malt and it’s no wonder that most people choose to drink their Scotch with nothing more than a little water. But with ingredients that complement the whisky’s peat, smoke, and herbal character, there’s no reason you can’t make delicious cocktails with it. We’ve rounded up 14 recipes to give you an introduction to Scotch cocktails, from a classic Rob Roy and a summery frozen Blood and Sand to a chai-infused punch.

What Ingredients Are Needed For The Blood And Sand

The bright orange juice adds just the right amount of acid and citrus sweetness. The juice opens up the flavors and brings a hint of sunshine to one of the great scotch whiskey cocktails. Most recipes call for Cherry Heering or a cherry liqueur. We love to use the cherry infused brandy that results from making our brandied cherries.

Richly cherry flavored, the combination of sweet and tart and mulling spices used to spice up the cherries, the cherry brandy pulls all those warm spices in the scotch into the forefront. We liked our recipe with a bit more scotch than the traditional recipe which calls for even parts of all the ingredients. We hope you give this one a try!

    Best Smoky: Laphroaig 10

    Courtesy of Reserve Bar

Region: Islay | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Vanilla, Oak, Smoke

I personally love peaty scotches, says Chasse, because they are so indicative of utilizing local ingredients and making a spirit in a specific place. They speak of the terroir of the Scottish bogs, where the peat burns to make the fire that dries malted or sprouted grain.

In Laphroaig scotch, peat flavor is at the forefront. I can imagine being on a blustery field the moment I pick up the glass, says Chasse. Although smoke is prominent, its not overpowering, and thats what makes the scotch so good. Anything thats one-note is not interesting, she says. But from the peat to the vanilla and oak notes to the fruity backbone, this takes the imbiber on a journey.

    Use Your Favorite Scotch

For the Rob Roy drink, use your favorite type of Scotch! If youre a fan, you probably already have your favorite bottles. We used a Dewars Blended Scotch whisky, which we had on hand from making the Penicillin cocktail, another great Scotch drink. Heres a little more about Scotch types:

    • Blended Scotch: Blended Scotch has a smooth flavor: almost like bourbon, but with more of a spicy finish. As its name suggests, its made by blending two types of whisky: barrel-aged malt whisky and grain whisky. This is what we suggest using here.
    • Single Malt Scotch: Single malt Scotch is a malt whisky thats from one distillery, and its usually a little more expensive. If you have one, you can certainly also use it in the Rob Roy.

Considering all factors , we find Monkey Shoulder to be the best blended scotch whisky on the market. Produced at the hands of William Grant, Monkey Shoulder is a blend of three single malts from well-known Speyside distilleries. Notes of toasty malt, vanilla, nutmeg, dried apricots, cinnamon, and buttered toast dominate the spirits lengthy, oak-tinged palate. Smooth and creamy with an orchard fruit sweetness and an edge of zesty citrus, this special reserve bottle pays tribute to the 1822 founder of The Glenlivet, George Smith, who designed the distillerys distinctive, genies lampshaped copper stills.

Back when Smith was first distilling, age statements were not a part of the scotch game, so Smith blended barrels of all sorts of ages. The Founders Reserve continues that tradition, with the addition of first-fill American oak casks for honeyed caramel undertones.

Best Under $: Aberfeldy 12 Year Old
