Though the brands first whiskey was supposed to be released in October of 2010, master distiller Lincoln delayed the launch six months until he deemed the liquid perfect. However, the bottles were already stamped with the formerly planned launch date: 10/10. Angels Envy has purposely refrained from updating its corks, keeping the 10/10 as a reminder that, when it comes to whiskey, perfection is worth waiting for.

Sweetly interesting. Aroma is soft and sweet with layers of sweets without much in the way of rustic notes to balance it out Palate follows suite being sweet all around without much to balance it out Finish picks up more nutty notes and kind of ends like a PB& J.
Yknow, the finish actually that sums up this whiskey, an oak-aged PB& J. Overall the Angels Envy Bourbon Whiskey is sweet, too sweet for me. I know some love it but for me its borderline cloying. The port sweetness doesnt fully compliment so much as take over and pull away from the bourbon essence.

Lincoln Henderson did it by breaking a nearly two-hundred-year-old divine contract. He’s always been one to sneer at traditions. So when he set out to create the most heavenly of all bourbons, Lincoln decided he might have to break some rules.
See, in bourbon circles, it’s well accepted that each distillery owes a percentage of the bourbon in the barrels to the angels. This little agreement is known as the Angel’s Share, and nobody has dared mess with it for two centuries.

The Brand Took Distilling Downtown A Louisville First
Though Angels Envy launched in 2011, it didnt have its own distillery until 2013. Until July 9, 2013, when the brand broke ground on its distillery in downtown Louisville, Angels Envy was using small batches of whiskey sourced from various distilleries. Distilling in this particular building was particularly meaningful to Lincoln, as his own father had worked there years prior. The distillery was completed and opened to the public in 2016, becoming the first full-production whiskey distillery in downtown Louisville.

Angels Envy recently released its limited-edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak Casks in celebration of the 10th anniversary of its Founders Day. It took Production Manager Kyle Henderson five years to source the rare, unused Mizunara barrels that were used to finish the release. Nose: Sweet, jammy and fruity. Honey, slivered almond, strawberry jam and some pepper linker.
Taste: Thin on the palate, but jammy and sweet. This shows far more restraint than the Angels Envy Rye though this also clearly lacks dosing. Toffee, hint of nutmeg, strawberry jam and faint cinnamon.
Finish: Short to medium finish. Some honey, more fruits, butter cream. Light oak.

How To Drink Angel’s Envy Bourbon
Angel’s Envy is not a budget bourbon. Though the Port Cask is reasonably priced for a premium whiskey, you’ll still likely want to enjoy it wisely. To pay respect to the craftsmanship that went into making it, tasting it straight is highly recommended. Pouring a shot over a large piece of ice and letting it rest for a few minutes will open up the bourbon and display its wonderful aroma and taste as well.
After experiencing the bourbon in each of those venues, you’ll have a good sense of cocktails that are worthy of this fine whiskey. This is not one that you’ll want to heavily dilute or pair with strong flavors. Instead, stick to classically-styled recipes with just a few ingredients that enhance, rather than detract from, the bourbon.
Angels Envy Thinks Highly Of Itself
The small percentage of spirit lost each year during barrel aging to evaporation is traditionally called the angels share. Reportedly, after tasting his finished bourbon, Lincoln joked that if the angels share is what evaporates, then the angels envy is whats left in the barrel. Thus, Angels Envy was born.

Why Lincoln Did What He Did
But Lincoln, being a bit of a malcontent, figured maybe he could put a twist on this deal. Legend has it that he sat the angels down and got them to agree that they could take more of their share if they agreed to leave behind something even better.
The deal was sealed. But when the angels snuck a sip of Lincoln’s incomparably smooth bourbon with exquisitely subtle “expressions” that came from joining 200 years of bourbon tradition with 400 years of port wine heritage, they felt they should have gotten a bigger share.
That’s why Lincoln thought it appropriate to call his bourbon Angel’s Envy. The angels, however, don’t find it funny.

What Does Angel’s Envy Bourbon Taste Like
Angel’s Envy is a delicious whiskey with a wonderful balance from start to finish. The nose opens up with a soft, seductive bouquet of caramel, praline, raisins, and vanilla. This bourbon’s port barrel finish adds sophistication to the palate and finds a balance with the typical flavors found in bourbon. It has a rich mouthfeel marked by the flavors of vanilla, bitter chocolate, maple syrup, and whiskey’s signature oaky undertones. The finish lingers and gradually melts away while delighting the drinker with a port-influenced sweetness.
The Downtown Distillery Had An Opening Day Hiccup
On the very first day the distillery was open, according to a spokesperson, Angels Envy production needed to mill malted barley which is used in the mash into the cooker. However, instead of the barley going into the tanks, it was blown into the actual mill room, resulting in a foot and a half of malted barley covering the floor. It took six hours, and many employees, to clean the space.

What Is Angel’s Envy Bourbon Made From
Angel’s Envy started out as a one-bottle brand in 2011. It was designed by Lincoln Henderson, the former Brown-Forman master distiller and creator of Woodford Reserve. Henderson is a legend in the industry with over 40 years of experience, and that is reflected in the quality of this bourbon.
The mash bill of Angel’s Envy is made up of 72 percent corn, 18 percent rye, and 10 percent malted barley. Each of the grains is locally sourced and non-GMO. The original expression is aged for 4 to 6 years in American white oak barrels, per the legal requirements for bourbon. The process is unique in that the whiskey is finished in former ruby port wine barrels for an additional 3 to 6 months. Each batch matures at a slightly different rate and is exposed to varying weather patterns, so the aging ranges give the distiller’s freedom to taste the whiskey and pull it from the barrel only when its ready. It is bottled at 43.3 percent alcohol by volume .
The name “Angel’s Envy” plays off a term that distillers often use for aged distilled spirits. In the barrel, it’s expected that a certain percentage of liquor is lost to evaporation, called the “angel’s share.” The thought is that this whiskey is so good that the angels are envious that they didn’t get more.

Angels Envy Ended A Master Distillers Retirement
Angels Envy began as an idea shared between a father and his son. Master distiller Lincoln Henderson had been retired for several years when his son, Wes, first approached him about going into business together. By then, Lincoln had already made a significant impact in the world of distilling. For example, during his years at Brown-Forman, one of Americas largest spirits and wine companies, Lincoln developed renowned brands such as Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack.
Despite being in retirement, Lincoln kept his finger on the pulse of the whiskey industry with occasional consulting work. Meanwhile, his son Wes had served as the CEO for Master Distiller Select LLC. Prior to that, he was the President and CEO of Conecuh Ridge Distillery, the producer of Clyde Mays Whiskey. Wes convinced his father to come out of retirement to bring to fruition Lincolns vision of launching a bourbon brand as a family. Wess oldest son, Kyle, soon joined the business, eventually followed by his younger sons Andrew, Spencer, and Connor.
