A Brief History Of 1800 Tequila

Even though 1800 Tequila is named after the fateful year when tequila was first placed in an oak cask, its start was much more recent. One hundred seventy-five years later, in 1975 1800 Tequila was launched.

At the time of the launch, it was named Cuervo 1800 Tequila. If that name rings a bell and reminds you of the worlds best-selling Jose Cuervo Tequila its not a coincidence.

1800 Tequila and Jose Cuervo Tequila are both owned by the Beckman Family which is made up of descendants of Don José Antonio de Cuervo.

The same Don José Antonio de Cuervo received a land grant from the King of Spain in 1758 that gave him the right to grow blue agave plants to produce tequila in Jalisco, Mexico. Making him the first officially licensed tequila manufacturer in history.

Quite a history for a brand that wasnt around until 1975. 1800 Tequila is generally produced in the same manner as other premium tequilas, except for how their agave is harvested.

They use 100% Weber blue agave that is aged for eight to twelve years. Once harvested, the agave core is baked, shredded, fermented, distilled, and aged.

The type of tequila produced depends on how long the tequila has been aged. Silver tequila, which is typically clear, is usually aged no more than a few weeks and often in stainless steel.

Reposado tequila is aged from two months to one year, most often in oak barrels. Añejo is aged one to three years and an extra añejo is aged for over three years, again, most often in oak barrels.

Is 1800 Tequila Vegan

Why yes it is. 1800 Tequila, along with most other brands, is ok for vegans to consume. But wait, I thought tequila has a worm in the bottle? Worms are actually not found in tequila bottles.

If they are found in a bottle of alcohol, it would be in a bottle of Mezcal, which is another agave-based Mexican spirit.

Tequila Alternatives And Comparisons

1800 Cristalino Tequila Review

1800 is a premium tequila made with 100% Weber blue agave which immediately sparks a comparison to other premium tequilas like Patrón and Don Julio.

1800 Tequila is a bit more affordable than Patrón and Don Julio, usually about $15 dollars less for a 750 ml bottle. All three have a pure taste that lends itself to drinking straight or mixed-in cocktails.

The tequila that is also widely available at a similar price point is Espolòn Tequila. Espolòn Tequila is a newer kid on the block, started in 1998, but has continued to impress with its versatile and affordable tequilas.

The last alternative to 1800 Tequila is the worlds best-selling tequila, Jose Cuervo. Jose Cuervo has a lower price point than 1800 Tequila but in a pinch, a bottle of Jose Cuervo Especial Silver can be substituted for a bottle of 1800 Silver Tequila.

This is especially true if the intention is to make a Margarita, a tequila cocktail, or have a traditional shot of tequila with salt and lime.
